I'm the opposite. I'm a pretty good clean singer but I couldn't do a harsh vocal if my life was on the line.

I've tried to have a go but I ended up coughing and spluttering afterwards haha.

Don't know how they do it. Must be effects added on their voices nowadays.

Cradle Of Filth is about as far as I can go for listening to that kind of music. You don't know what they're screaming or growling about unless you look at the lyrics lol.

I suppose it takes some form of training yes, but not everyone has the ability to perform such tasks.

You need the proper technique to not **** up your voice (which is not easy but any singer must do this), and scream/growl on key.
If you wanna do punk screaming however, just yell and scream. You can't avoid damaging your voice, but the more ****ed up your voice the more punk you know.

I wouldn't know. I'm not a vocalist.

I've been afraid to try cause of the damage I heard it can cause. Though I would love to see how I end up sounding like if I do it professionally. I wonder what bands my growl would be comparable to.

Love John Tardy. One of the most amazing things about Obituary, besides everything else about them.

True that my friend, true that... John Tardy's vocals ARE amazing . If any Death Metal vocalist can truely be called a "singer" I think he has to be the one. Don't get me wrong I really like a lot of Death Metal vocalists but John is definitely my favorite. But even putting Tardy aside Obituary still has that Florida murder swamp stomp going for them. Great band.
