JP isn't a ****ty band, so it's difficult for me to call them power metal.

A lot of people go around with that misconception.

I think you guys have misinterpreted that wiki link, it wasn't calling Judas Priest a power metal band, but just saying that they were highly influential on what would become known as power metal. They along with Iron Maiden and Dio era-Rainbow were indeed highly influential on the genre, as most of these bands had everything that power metal bands revered.

In many ways power metal was the saviour of 'middle of the road metal' especially in the mid 1980s where there was so much fragmentation of the heavy metal genre into loads of sub-genres. People like me that love power metal see it as so, but I guess those that don't like it will probably see it as a heavy metal parody to be avoided.

Also worth bearing in mind is that power metal from that era can be split into two types to confuse things even more: North American power metal and European power metal and there are some noticeable differences between the two.

Aside from "they dumb."
Painkiller. I'd call it speed metal, due to it being somewhere between JP and thrash, but calling some of the songs on there power metal wouldn't be off base.

And I think making distinctions between Iron Maiden and power metal without in-depth, technical talk about songwriting would be pretty much impossible. They do pretty much everything that 95% of power metal bands do. I don't think of them as a power metal band, and I would think it was odd if people suddenly started calling them one, but I really wouldn't know how to go about arguing the point.

Clearly the way to Kickstart the Metal Community On This Site is to argue about things like what Power Metal is.

I hope we can agree on one thing: power metal is stupid but people discussing power metal on the internet is stupider.

Power metal is all that is good in life and Hansi Kursch is God with a microphone. If I knew what you listened to I'd tell you why it was shit.
