^I'd argue then that music genres are relatively flexible. For instance, before thrash metal was a de facto genre, James Hetfield called Kill Em a power metal album.

This is the first place that I have ever heard Judas Priest and power metal in the same sentence. They've been considered heavy metal for as long as I can remember. Just because someone can reach high notes doesn't instantly make it power metal.

I agree.

A lot of people go around with that misconception.

I've always had people I know talk about them as power metal. I don't know what to think now!

Yeah, I'm with Nilla on that. I actually don't think power metal when I hear them because of my preconceived notions of 'power metal', but I've heard a lot of people refer to Priest as such.

lolwut, I thought everyone knew Judas Priest is just plain Heavy Metal. When I think of traditional heavy metal, Judas Priest is one of the first things that comes to mind.

No, sorry. I have to go against my lady (Ah! If only! ... Sorry, where was I? ) on this one and stick with the guys. When I think power metal I hear galloping guitars, frantic keyboards, high-pitched (sometimes) excited vocals and really more a sort of fusion of traditional and prog metal. Also, a lot of the lyrics are fantasy/myth based and such. Stratotvarius. Helloween. Manowar. Axxis. These are power metal bands.

If you're going to call JP power metal then Iron Maiden are, and so are Saxon.

And just about any other NWOBHM-style trad metal band.

Well, that album was released before thrash existed, and "power metal" was probably a two minute old term itself, without any real movement behind it. Back in the early eighties American heavy metal was just kind of a hodge podge of bands trying to build off the NWOBHM. There weren't any movements, and new terms like "thrash", and "speed metal", and "power metal", didn't really describe much more than that a band was faster and/or heavier than Iron Maiden.
