But he picked Blood Mountain.

I just combed through 22 pages of posts to see whatever I posted back in 2014 only to realize that I didn't actually post anything at all. So, to rectify that:

10. Ulver - Bergtatt: Et eeventyr i 5 capitler (1995)

An absolute stunning debut of an album and definitely one of the pinnacle black metal albums.

9. Blut aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God (2003)

I can't say any album has ever scared me in the way a horror film or game has, but this album's mastery of the dissonance soundscape makes it incredibly disquieting in a way that only metal can.

8. Acid Bath - Pagan Terrorism Tactics (1996)

I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion or not but I've always preferred Pagan Terrorism Tactics over When The Kite String Pops. This album grooves from start to finish in a way that is devilishly delightful and really showcases the range of Dax Riggs' vocals.

7. Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape (2001)

This album is a roller coaster, with peaks and valleys that makes every track memorable and leaving you with a big shit eating grin on your face at the end of it. The remastered version comes with the additional song "Voices" which might actually be one of the better songs from an album already packed with great songs.

6. ISIS - Panopticon (2004)

I love this album above all other ISIS albums because I think it struck the perfect balance between their sludge metal roots, and their slow incorporation of more post-rock elements. There are some absolutely stunningly beautiful passages on this album and incredibly deep and atmospheric production.

5. Killing Joke - Hosannas From the Basements of Hell (2006)

While not strictly a metal band, I think Hosannas From the Basements of Hell is one of the heaviest albums ever created. The production is just so atmospheric and murky, and the ways the songs build, it feels like you're being slowly crushed to death.

4. Enslaved - Below the Lights (2003)

I agonized between this album and their 2010 album Axioma Ethica Odini. I got into Enslaved in 2008, so Axioma Ethica Odini was the first new Enslaved album I was anticipating and it completely blew me away when I first listened to it but so did Below the Lights. So I decided to give it to whichever album had the better introduction song and I think "As Fire Swept Clean the Earth" is just a touch better song than "Ethica Odini".

3. Nevermore - The Politics of Ecstasy (1996)

I honestly think Nevermore are one of the more underrated metal bands of the '90's and '00's. I never see them come up much in discussion despite the fact that they pretty steadily released solid albums between 1995-2010. This album in particular might not have the same polished production as say Dead Heart in a Dead World (2000) or This Godless Endeavor (2005), but it is easily their angriest, and that passion really shines through on Warrel Danes' vocals and Jeff Loomis' riffs.

2. Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood (1996)

I will always love Enemy of the Sun for laying the groundwork for what Through Silver in Blood would eventually become. At the same time, I do kind of blame this album for each subsequent Neurosis album being a bit... flabby, but at the time in their discography and development as musicians, this is a monumental achievement and practically birthed a new subgenre of metal.

1. Strapping Young Lad - City (1997)

Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, and featuring 8 original tracks and one cover of a Cop Shoot Cop song. By the end of those 40 minutes it feels like you've just run a marathon, with song after song assaulting your ears. Devin's "wall of sound" production style really helps every instrument on it pop and gives every musician a chance to show what they can do, especially Gene "the Atomic Clock" Hoglan on drums.

Seeing a Strapping album at #1 brought a huge smile to my face, Devin is one of my big idols.

But ja, it is pretty front-loaded.
Yeah minus sweet silence the second half is forgettable, that's what I meant. "Sweet Silence" is a legit candidate for best death metal song of all-time.

I had to kick off Gorgut's Obscura from my list, because the second-half of that album is weak.
  1. Dopesmoker [2012 reissue] by Sleep—Super-atmospheric stoner/doom that is just riffs and vocals for the entire album. Sounds boring on paper, but these riffs are REALLY good. A perfect album.
  2. Variations On A Theme by OM—Meditative stoner metal that is also just riffs, vocals, and drums for the entire album. Chris Haikus is one of my favorite drummers. Another perfect album.
  3. Deception Ignored by Deathrow—The most technical album ever released in thrash metal and the most technical album released in metal until the mid-90s. "Triocton" is the "YYZ" of metal.
  4. Epidemic of Violence by Demolition Hammer—Epidemic of Violence is the most intense thrash album ever.
  5. The Arrival by [Keith] Merrow—Sci-fi heavy, video-game-soundtrack-like metal. Not sure what genre it belongs to.
  6. Master of Puppets by Metallica
  7. Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Version by Earth—Atmospheric chugging drone doom metal with an awesome guitar tone. A lot of people call it boring, but I love it. It sounds like a soundtrack for a dreary day.
  8. ...And Justice For All by Metallica
  9. Reign In Blood by Slayer—Between the riffs and Araya's vitriolic performance, this is a beast of an album.
  10. Darkness Descends by Dark Angel—Super intense thrash metal that has the best drumming I have ever heard in metal. Gene Hoglan is a drummer's drummer. "The Burning of Sodom" is one of thrash metal's most intense moments.
Wait, what happened to Artillery? I thought By Inheritance was your tech thrash go to?
