I don't get The Smiths.

I just listened to the first Smiths album...and I didn't like it all that much. I thought I would, considering what I've heard about them from people with similar music tastes. The sound reminds me a lot of post-punk, and I'm not the biggest fan of post-punk. Most songs usually have this (probably unintentional) sad ish vibe going on in a lot of post-punk, which I'm not a fan of. The album just kind of bored me. I'm keeping it in my library because I don't think it's bad music or anything and I might revisit it later, but what's so appealing about The Smiths? I know it's the favourite band of a certain regular here, so I'd love to hear his opinion :P.

The debut didn't really impress me that much at first, either. "This Charming Man" was killer, the rest seemed filler. But I tried listening to some of their other songs, and after a while I got used to Morrissey's sentimental crooning and started appreciating the lyrics. Then I guess it just clicked. Also, I'm not sure if the debut is the best starting point, especially not if you don't like post-punk. The Queen is Dead is just very appreciable non-post-punk jangly indie pop.

Spoiler for songs:

The Smiths is my favourite band (were you referring to me?), but I totally get it if you can't get into them.

Yup, it was you, haha.
I am listening to the second album (at the 5th song), and I do have to say, it's more entertaining than the first album for me.

I love the second album, I think it might be my favourite. Just... ignore that last song.

Isn't that the Title track? That makes me really curious about the last song, can't wait until I get to it xD. At the beginning of song 8 atm, and mine has 10 tracks for some reason instead of 9.

Yeah, on some issues, the song "How Soon is Now" is added to the tracklisting. The last song is the title track, and it's a pretty bad commentary on meat-eating.

Try the Queen is dead. That was my gateway album to the smiths...

Whoops, this was a post for the LastFM thread.

How can you be a Smiths fan and consider "Hand in Glove" filler?

Anyway, if you don't get/like The Smiths after a few attempts to get into them, it's all cool. Move on and try a few other bands instead. Too much music out there for you to bother listening to stuff you don't really like over and over again in the hope that it finally 'clicks'.

I thought so at first, but the debut album's grown on me and now I think every track is great in its own way, "Hand in Glove" included.
