Need new stuff to listen to. Going insane

Hey guys. Im completely stuck. Because of Spotify I feel as though I've discovered all the music I will ever find appealing. I need something new to listen to. Its been a couple of years since I found a new band that I liked.

I'm a big Tool/APC/Deftones fan. I also love System of a Down and their album Toxicity.
The last band I got into was Glassjaw, and I kinda forced myself to like them because I had nothing else to listen to.
Im into underground stuff that kicks ass, but is still original.
No Linkin Park/phony bull****.

Any suggestions would be a huge help.

Thanks guys

How about Psychofagist:

Yeah I've heard them a couple times. I'm not really into that MathMetal scene. I have trouble telling it apart from Dillinger Escape Plan. I'm looking got something less terrifying.

bob. 06-13-2014 07:49 AM

i have to say Jaszoon...you really found a track with a little bot of everything he mentioned :)

personally anytime someone says they love Tool i suggest the band Amplifier and in specific the album The Octopus

i don't understand why this band does not have the salivating fan base that Tool has

also if you in for something complex but with a bit more unadulterated anger i suggest Neurosis

kalikat 06-13-2014 08:51 AM

I've heard Nuerosis before and thought they were pretty good. I had never heard Amplifier before and saw the Tool similarity. It was alright. I'm pretty picky. I'm looking for something really original, something that sounds like nothing else, but that is also good and not just a bunch of bizarre noises strung together.

I think Deftones have a pretty unique sound, same with System of A Down. Maybe I'm asking for lightning in a bottle but thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Really? I guess they have speed and complexity in common, but I don't hear the similarities aside from that. I always associated Psychofagist more with a band like Painkiller because of the substantial jazz element to the music.

Anyway, how about Ufomammut? They don't sound like Tool exactly but you might enjoy the layered style and the feel that they are taking you on a journey.

thecornman 06-13-2014 12:39 PM

Clutch. Anything by them.

kalikat 06-13-2014 01:01 PM

I'm not necessarily looking for something that sounds like Tool. Im just looking for some original bands that don't suck. Ive heard Clutch before and thought they were alright, but Im looking for something that has made more of an impact on the music scene.
That's why I like Deftones' album White Pony or System of a Downs' Toxicity. THey were albums that were innovative, original, and really really good.

This. You have to be okay with no vocals though.

Frownland 06-13-2014 01:10 PM

Fantômas has a very original sound. It has Mike Patton from Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, Dave Lombardo from Slayer, Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle, and Buzz Osbourne from Melvins.

Their debut is my favourite, but some people prefer The Director's Cut, which is a pretty great album as well.

Oh okay in your original post you said you were into more underground stuff so that is why I suggested Clutch. I am not really sure what underground, but big impact on the music scene means?

definitely third Ufomaummut

I would say the majority of Ufomammut songs have vocals.

I see them more as sound effects that fade in and out seemingly randomly. Those vocals seemed to be produced differently than the actual music, so that they seem far away, not really part of it. They don't even have lyrics as far as I can tell, unless you count the sample of the woman. I definitely consider them more as an instrumental band.

They are low in the mix but they're definitely a presence. Your theory that they have no lyrics is interesting and has never occurred to me before. I always assumed the lyrics were (a) just hard to make out or (b) in Italian or (c) both.

Possibly, but if so they're still delivered in such a way that it sounds almost like primal screaming. Whatever the case you at least have to admit they treat vocals differently than most bands.

These guys are amazing! They contacted me for a music video and this is what we ended up with! Hope you guys are enyoing it! They are releasing an EP the 20th of july! Search for Chronus - Vault of Treachery on Youtube!

It`s not math rock, but it seems to me that the music of MB`s very own Plankton stands up well to some of the bands in this thread :-

There's just one word to describe this album: amazing. Everything on it is composed, played and produced by our man Plankton (okay, some keyboard parts apparently excepted but come on!) and it's easily, easily the equal of anything you can buy in your local record store or on itunes. From hard-hitting metal anthems to laidback guitar etudes, this album has it all. It's entirely instrumental, and therefore even more of a surprise that it didn't lose me along the way. Let me put it like this: I listened to the solo album by Neal Schon of Journey for this same year and I was bored to tears by about track three. I couldn't stop listening to this and I know all the tracks by heart now (by which I mean I can hum along with them, as I couldn't play a geetar to save my life!).

If you haven't heard his work yet get ye to Home - Planktons Odyssey and download the album, then just sit back and shake your head in amazement at the talent this guy has. I truly expect him to be discovered some time in the next few years and to rise to great heights. If not, there is no justice in this world. Tracks like "Lights of an unknown city", the scorching "Son of soothsayer", the frankly manic "Screaming at an empty canvas" all sit alongside gentle ballads like "Canadian mist" and "Fields of youth". Oh yeah, then there's the title track, both parts of it.

Stunning stuff. Incredible to think I know someone with this level of talent and creativity. I just hope he gets something new out next year, otherwise this file is going to end up getting corrupted from too much playing! Which reminds me: better make a backup!

TRACKLISTING

1. Flustraxion
2. Waiting impatiently
3. Shoveled
4. Lights of an unknown city
5. Canadian mist
6. Son of soothsayer
7. Here we go again
8. Xphereblotish
9. Screaming at an empty canvas
10. Krill part 1
11. Krill part 2
12. Fields of youth

^ I came across this the other day and am loving it! Very impressed that Plankton is much more than just a regular poster - he`s a genuinely talented musician too.
So thanks for allowing us to share this album, Plankton. It has a really great balance between fury, distortion and control; on track after track you seem to get the mixture just right. :thumb:

On another topic, I hope you get better soon - I was alarmed to read the list of injuries you recently sustained. You didn`t sound too worried about them, so I hope you`re staying positive despite the problems they must be giving you.

Thank you Lisna!

I have a new one I released in April of this year that TH was going to review, but well you know... he's disappeared. Hope he finds his way back here soon.

As for the injuries, I'm getting better everyday! I really appreciate the thoughts since I came very close to ending my life, if not only my ability to play.

You`re welcome, P. Is it ok that I downloaded Dream and Whale as well ? I hope you don`t mind. In fact I haven`t opened them yet - I`d prefer to get to know Krill better first.

Yes, I hope Trollheart comes back, but mainly I hope that his situation doesn`t bring him too low. (If you are lurking in these parts,TH, please take care - of yourself as well as your sister.)

Yeah, it sounds like you had a pretty serious spill, Plankton. I saw in another thread that you have an enviable social scene based around your bikes, so this is absolutely none of my business, but you may want to consider it as a heads up, and go easy on the bike-riding in the future. Ever thought of dressmaking? Not quite the same adrenalin or status, but the biggest injury risk would be pricking yr thumb with a needle. Maybe someone on MB can even fix you up with a sewing machine !

They're all free so no problem. Here's the order I created them if you'd rather do it chronologically:

1. The Dream
2. Krill
3. Whale

I also have dozens of other tunes that aren't up on my site, from all out shred fests to slow BB King, and Bonamassa style blues. I've worked with quite few singers over the years too, and have some folk style stuff, as well as a self produced album with the ex-singer from Zoetrope thats really low-fi production (my earliest attempts at recording). Let me know if you'd like to grab any of those, and I'll link you to it on SoundClick.

Thanks, I`ll definitely take your advice and investigate The Dream first. I wonder if you have a personal favourite among those three albums?

That`s very kind of you, Plankton; I`d be interested in some medium-paced blues or anything else that you`d particularly like to share, but I wouldn`t like to put you to any trouble, especially as I don`t know if I can access SoundClick.

I can`t offer you much in return, unless it`s a chance to hear this rather mournful song; as a musician in the post-Napster age you may be able to relate to the lyrics:-

If I had to choose one song out of all of those, it would be Fields Of Youth since it was written for my daughter.

^ Yes, that`s a nice tranquil track, Plankton and your comment reminds me that you wrote something very positive about parenthood elsewhere on MB. :thumb:

^ Many thanks for these links. For what they`re worth, these are my impressions of the songs in the order you posted them.-

BB-O-Riley: I love this kind of elec blues instrumental, so this was my favourite. It`s a track I know I`ll be able to listen to again and again without tiring of. (If it`s connected in any way to the famous Who song with a similar title, I don`t hear it.)
Workingclass Hero: Never liked this self-aggrandizing dirge of Lennon`s very much. I felt this version was brought to life by your fuzzy, languid guitar lines which are rather drowned by the vocals. Recently I`ve been listening to some of Duane Allman`s session-work tracks, and the same thing often applies; a vocalist gets the principal credit while the real star is in the background. I wonder how often musicians` feelings change as they play - from happily co-operating on material to resentment at being sidelined? Much the same as in real life, I suppose.
Pat`s House: a good rocking workout. My personal highlight is hearing the vocalist shout, "Come on Plankton!" Recognition at last for my man, the Plank !!
Soundcloud: "Your present browser is not compatable with Soundcloud." - so I`ll be coming back to those in the future, ok?

It's a song done in the style of BB King, whose real name is Riley B. King. No connection to the Who song, other than the similarities in the name, which is where the idea came from.

Sometimes I have to blend into the music for the sake of the song, and this is one of those moments where I did just that. The two female vocalists I was working with are really good at what they know (mostly folk type stuff), and I tried to stay out of the way so as not to throw them off their game. We recorded a few live sessions with one mic placed in the center of the room, and this was an excerpt from that. I'm not too partial to that song either, I should've just linked you to everything so you could pick and choose.

LOL, Thats the singer for our cover band. She said "C'mon Pat, go!" as we were doing it live and I was planning on doing a solo overdub, so she's sitting there waiting for me to solo and I'm just looking at her and shrugging while keeping the rhythm going. Took her a second, but she realized what I was doing.

Many thanks for putting a link to so many songs, Plankton. It`s a real treasure trove.
Rather at random, I listened to Lucky Man and collabsintheworks drivingjazz. On both, I really loved the soaring guitar; am I right in thinking that Lucky Man has some special electronic treatment to the guitar part?
The Dark- Guitar Chaos was a bit more chaotic than I usually like - but I can`t complain as you were delivering on what the title says!

Very interesting to hear what was going on in the studio - that sounds like an amusing moment. Does "our cover band" mean that you have a band specially for doing song covers, and then you do your own instrumental compositions apart?

I guess there`s almost always a backstory to how a musician chooses a title for an instrumental. Thanks for explaining about BB -O-Riley. Next backstory explanation, if you`re in the mood anytime, is about your name. I wonder why you chose "Plankton", and for how long he has been your alter-ego?

( Thanks also for your offer of help with my browser. TBH it may be something as simple as changing to Google Chrome; I can probably bully my son into sorting it out for me. )

No special treatment, I was using a Les Paul Goldtop with a DOD Death Metal Pedal at the time for Lucky Man, which is me playing with a good friend in his kitchen. He used to record us every time I'd come over, and we did a few coffee shop tours in the 90's. The Dark was something I did for a guitar competition, and Driving Jazz is a collaboration with an online friend.

Yes, I'm in 4 different bands, as well as do my own thing (Planktons Odyssey). Two of which are on hiatus right now (Loud Mouth Dog, and K|S|P Project). Beyond The Z is our cover band, which doesn't have any gigs at the moment, but that changes from week to week, and the last one "The Makeshifts" will be playing a small festival in MI coming up in Aug. It'll be our 3rd time in 6 years (a semi-annual fest).

Here's a couple band practice recordings from Beyond The Z. Play On is just a random improvisation we did while waiting for our other guitar player, and Too Rolling Stoned is a Robin Trower cover. We have a huge setlist, but these are from the only time we recorded at band practice with one mic placed in the center of the room:

...and here's a live show recording of us covering Black Sabbath's Snowblind (sound quality is pretty bad). I'm playing the lead guitar parts as well as the rhythm:

There are millions of aspiring guitar players out there swimming around in the musical sea just waiting to get swallowed up by larger organisms (record labels, etc.). Also, and alter explanation would be that a guitar is affectionately known as a plank, and I play a ton of music on it. I've been using Plankton since around 2006.

As you can see, I love to play. I really didn't want to turn this into a Plankton thread, but it's a bit late for that. ;) Thanks again Lisna, it's people like you that keep the flame burning.

^ I really wouldn`t worry about that, Plankton! In fact, I`ve been wondering why your music doesn`t getting more coverage on MB.

Many thanks for all the links and answers - I can see that Plankton is quite a suitable name. Unfortunately, I really have to log out of MB and get busy now - I`m going on vacation for a month and have to pack, but I`ll definitely pick up this dialogue at a later date, if that`s ok with you Plankton.

Yours in haste, Lisna.
