For me to call a genre extreme metal there has to be a general consensus that all of the bands in the genre must play extreme metal. Like, I wouldn't call thrash metal an extreme metal genre, since much of it was made up of bands like Anthrax, Annihilator, Metallica, etc, even though bands like Slayer and Kreator would qualify (I'd use "extreme thrash" to make the distinction.) But, for the most part, any death metal or black metal band is at least encouraged to play extreme metal. Many bands experiment with non-extreme metal forms of music, and some even dispense with extreme metal altogether at times, but as a status quo, those genres are explicitly concerned with being "extreme", rather than potentially less hardline concepts like "aggressive" or "hard" or "fast" or whatever.

Groove metal bands in general are more of the thrash metal mindset, where they're "badass", but aren't necessarily out to actually be extreme metal. So I'd consider the bands at the heavier end of the spectrum, like Pantera and Machine Head, to be flirting with extreme metal, even though their music might actually be more extreme than many actual extreme metal bands (Although I sometimes go back and forth with those two bands, depending which albums we're talking about.) A vague distinction perhaps, but it makes sense in my mind. Lamb of God though, at least their first two albums, I'd definitely consider extreme metal, since they were obviously going for extreme. I wouldn't be surprised if they played a few blast beats back in their early early days.

To be extreme metal, a band must be fronted by Gary Cherone.

Agree with most of that and thrash is probably the dividing line between what is extreme and what is not with the bands you've mentioned. I was thinking along similar lines for when I go into thrash in my journal.

New update: Anything in purple has been listened to, reviewed and posted. Further recs are ok but I can't guarantee I'll get to them. Send them in if you want though, I will try.

Default Metal Month II: Day One

We've opened with two new albums from the "Freshly forged in '14" section, with the latest release from Panopticon, "Roads to the north", and Savage Messiah's "The fateful dark", while also starting off on our short world tour with "The International Language of Metal". We start our journey in Brazil, where so far we've reviewed "Legacy of humanity" by Anubis.

Lots more to come tomorrow, and we'll be revealing who our Featured Artiste is. You may be surprised!

Drop in if you feel like it. The beer is always cold, and free, and the women? Well they're not cold, nor free, but ... you know ...

Default Metal Month II: Day Four

Back we go to our Featured Artiste, to sample the delights of Slayer's second album, "Hell awaits", while in the Members' Top Ten lists we're running the second third of Janszoon's , with contributions from Electric Wizard, Faith No More, High on Fire and one I couldn't find from Psychofagist. We also have new "Freshly Forged" albums from Desert Lord and Battleroar, as well as another member-recommended album, this time from Plankton as I listen to and review Cavalera Conspiracy's "Inflikted".

Tomorrow we're back in Brazil and also opening The Batlord's Torture Chamber (enter ye who dare), as well as a few other surprises.

Don't you mean one I located for you but you didn't want to listen to from Psychofagist?
