I mean liking it is one thing, but you have a lot of tech skill junkies who think liking Dream Theater and Symphony X makes them sophisticated music scholars.
Petrucci's solo career is great, it shows that he's not trying to market himself.

You listen to the music, you don't watch the music video...

I mean, I don't listen to Symphony X at all really, but I can appreciate them because they are somewhat original. I couldn't care less about their image because I listen to music because I like music, not because some artist looks better, or writes better lyrics.

Err, all I hear is Bruce Dickinson wannabee vocals and Neo Classical shred guitar peppered with cheesy keyboard lines. Putting aside their use of odd time signatures, theres nothing really that original about them.

For good progressive metal. I prefer Ayreon, Queensryche, Kings X, Planet X and yes Tool. All better than Dream Theater and Symphony X in my opinion.

Have you heard King X- Gretchen Goes To Nebraska album? Not a whiff of metal on that album, but it is still awesome.Their melodies and vocal work deserve far more appreciation.

I definitely prefer those bands over them, but I was just saying that we are acting like this band is absolutely terrible when they really aren't. They just aren't that good.

I agree... Symphony X really isn't that bad, and Russell Allen is one of the few prog metal vocalists I like. Having said that, I haven't heard any of their albums since the Odyssey.

You do have a point, but i don't agree with your last sentence.
In what way are DT/Sym-X worse than the bands mentioned?
Comparing here doesn't work all that well...they don't sound the same at all.
Just because they have annoying fanbois doesn't make them bad in any way.
I actually think they are really great...just that, some of the ppl who listen to them should check out other stuff too.

Stupid statement.

Just dissing them bcuz they are cheesy is as bad as the fans themselves. To be fair though, sym-x aren't all that cheesy...just some parts of their songs might seem cheesy.
Sure, they might have annoying fans here and there(and tbh, i know only annoying DT fans...Rarely do i hear Sym-X having annoying fans).

Also, beeing cheesy ain't all that bad. Ever heard of rhapsody? You might get annoyed if you keep listening to them, but check them out every now and then and you'll definitely like them. They really have perfected the art of cheesiness!

Anyways, point being, you can enjoy listening to them as well as others of the same genre like fates warning, queensryche, Ayreon, King's-X etcetc.
Just because they have annoying fans isn't a valid reason to diss them. If you don't like them, then thats your preference but labeling them as "not so good" or "sh!tty" is just stupid.
