Slipknot appealed at the time to disgruntled young teenagers. They gave off an angst ridden, angry vibe that suckered their fans in, let them feel like they belonged to a bigger movement.
Slipknot fans would all have the hoodies, many had the tattoos, masks, etc. It was alike a cult movement. A less gay Insane Clown Posse.
What was it Slipknot followers called themselves, maggots, right? Either way, they clearly had a passionate fan base.

On the other hand, Nickelback never really had a diehard following, or any following that wasn't comprised of easily offended passive radio listeners.
I can't imagine Nickelback displaying any sort of emotion, and their music could fill a small village fete on a sunday.
They're the time of music that's designed for people who don't like music and have never shown one ounce of artistic integrity.

Nickelback may actually be one of the worst things to happen to contemporary radio. They told other bands it's okay to be mediocre, it's okay to be horseshit because there's enough passive people out there that will buy a compilation of your radio hits.
That's an interesting view on Slipknot that I hadn't really considered before. I always thought of them as Fischer-Price Metal, something easy to get into when you're still young and trying to figure it out. From them you learn about other metal bands and (hopefully) move onto listening to them, while at least acknowledging who helped get you there. I'm guilty of this, and while Slipknot weren't the first metal band I listened to, they were certainly within the first 10, and were probably my favorite from the contemporary metal bands I was into at the time. I can't say I'd go back and listen to them now, but I can at least admit they played a part in getting me into metal. I think there's a lot of people in their mid 20's that need to come to terms with this and move on.

Seeing you reply to this, WtB, reminds me that neither one of them (least of all Slipknot, again I don't think their first album is that bad) is worse than Limp Bizkit

Limp Bizkit at least had Wes Borland whose Black Light Burns project is at least tolerable in a kind of banal way. Same with Slipknot and Joey Jordison, who if nothing else is at least a good example of the drummer getting more spotlight than anyone else. Nickelback doesn't have anything like that, they just excel at being as banal and unoffensive as possible.

Also just like how you feel Slipknot's first album wasn't that bad. The same can be said for Limp Bizkit as well even though I played the hell out of Chocolate Starfish that came later on.

Lol, I remember I had you fooled on my little gag.

No it doesn't get much worse than Mr. Durst & crew though their videos do provide some good comic relief!

I'm actually in the minority here, as I chose Nickleback for I must confess.... I love the song Big Rock Star... a guilty pleasure
