There is a lot of great stuff by them.
My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life and Blackwater Park are 3 perfect albums in one row!
Even I know this is not true. There are so many better Swedish metal bands than Opeth, who are anyway kind of no longer even any sort of a metal band, but have transitioned into very much a prog rock band or something in the last few years.

I really dig Opeth, especially in their heavy metal phase when they were releasing those albums, and let's not forget Ghost Reveries, Watershed, Morningrise, and even when they split apart the soft and heavy aspects into separate albums on Deliverance and Damnation. They have a very deep discography, but I'd say that Scandinavia has maybe the overall deepest heavy metal scene of any area on the planet. It's actually such a big deal there that extreme metal varieties like death metal and black metal have taken hold in mainstream popular culture. Because of that, I wouldn't say they're the best but they're up there and I'd say they're probably my personal favorite.

I find their metal albums to be really drab and also not very well written. It's very obvious that they're just sort of gluing together a bunch of ideas - leading to these long, multi part tracks with often very clumsy transitions from one idea to the next. They have their own sound, so that's a good thing about them, and they're not bad musicians either. I just don't think they ever had much grasp of how to write a good song either.

Really? I always thought that their song structure was one of their stronger suits. I only listened to them up until Watershed though.

Opeth is totally satanic. It is more then obvious just like all metal. Metal bands just tell the media what they do so that they make it seem like a big joke. They know what they are doing and the majority of them have already sold themselves out to the devil in trade for money and fame. They usually have witches or satanist come to the recording studios and put incantations on the cd's and all promotions so that the innocent 14 year old kid who buys the Slayer or Opeth album will open a doorway to the occult and be oppressed and be forever tormented. Then when they play the cd demons manifest and are drawn to the music that gives them the right to operate.

Heavy metal was carefully crafted by Satan to trap America's youth and recruit so many people into serving Satan. So many innocent people just buy cd's because of the phenomenal guitar riffs and the intimidation of the music and get sucked right into occult bondage and so many end up committing suicide or doing extremely heanous crimes.

My prayers go out to Christians who are blinded to what is really going on behind the scenes of the bands and how they are totally sold out to Satan and are just leading America's youth right into bondage and to being enslave to Satan.

How many of you Christians that listen to Satanic music suffer from bad dreams and out of body experiences?

Those dreams and experiences are just doorways that have been opened for the demonic spirit of death to torture you body and to instill fear into your life.

DISCERNMENT- to discover; to recognize; the ability to discover or recognize.

Hebrews 5:14

But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

We must train our consciences, our senses, and our minds to discern good from evil.

We need to recognize temptation before it traps us?

Let's see here:

Heavy metal that glorifies the sinful nature, the flood of dissipation that pagans endulge in daily, promotes Satan's kingdom of darkness, and the evil desires of the human heart.

Would a Christian discern this music as good or evil?

Praying that the blinders will be removed here and the right discernment will be made.

I could be wrong, but I just feel like they tend to do a lot of jarring transitions where there doesn't seem to be any musical themes carried over between segments. I also remember watching a making-of documentary for one of the albums where it seemed Akerfeldt's songwriting approach basically consisted of taking a bunch of ideas he had amassed and finding out how to glue them together. To my ears, they've actually become better at making songs with a coherent flow to them on the last two albums.

Nope. Opeth is very Satanic and if you're going to listen to them, then you should at least be aware of the effects.

I don't consider them Satanic. I didn't find any stuff where they glorify Satan and evil.
Concept album Still Life criticizes some Christian community who banished the main character. Album Ghost Reveries has an occult theme, but it's not Satanic.
That's all.
