Akerfeldt could always sing the way he does now. It's not like his beautiful Viking sooth rasp was born out of the death of his growl. I'm incredibly sad that his growl is gone. That's Opeth. Pale Communion while still fantastic is just not why I started listening to them. Luckily I was able to see them before his growl died.

I feel Opeth lost their edge when his voice went and while I wouldn't say they're bad now by any means, I definitely don't find their new material as enjoyable as their earlier stuff.

I share the same thoughts.

I think new Opeth is just as good as old Opeth. His growl is awesome and his singing is awesome.

Yes. You like both incarnations of Opeth. That's fine. My point is that they're no longer the Opeth I grew up listening to. They're not a death metal band anymore. This is coming from somebody who thinks Damnation is one of the best albums of all time. I just miss the brutal mayhem.

^I can agree with everything said above. I like his growls as well. But his clean vocals still fit the band really well. At least they didn't sell out and try something completely different because of it. Still one of my favorite vocalist. He's up there with Steven Wilson for me.

I'm not really fond of their mellowing out either.

Well, i didn't grow up with them. I discovered them a year or two ago. And haven't stopped listening since. As much as I love death metal, I also love mellow prog rock. So, you know.
