Music is subjective
Obviously it is, I agree with it and most of you probably do to.
If music is subjective however, how come we always seem to go out of our way to attack certain fanbases and tell them the music they like sucks. Classic examples are Black Veil Brides Blood On The Dance Floor Nickleback I'm not saying I like these bands and I will admit many of the bands who get attacked usually have poor musicianship. However they do have fans and we treat those fans like they are wrong. Attack Attack! Call It Quits | News @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com read the comments in this article and you'll know exactly what I mean. Granted most of you probably hate Attack! Attack!, that doesn't mean everyone does and their opinion is just as valid as yours. These people however have a complete disregard for other peoples opinions and the few people who said "ya know, I kinda liked them it sucks to see them break up" everyone attaccked them and said "get a better taste in music" why do we do this? |
Music, at its height, is an external expression of internal idea or emotion. Further, music acts as a cultural or class signifier. Hence, music tends to be either representative of or, in terribly sad cases a replacement for, values. Value systems tend to be mutually exclusive.
So, the answer is as long as music has meaning beyond base entertainment, people will be intolerant and judgmental of others taste. Understand? |

I like Attack! Attack! am I wrong or that, no I'm not However, most people hate on certain bands because in their minds their opinion is 'right' and if they don't like a band other people are wrong and stupid for listening to it |
It's called opinion and we are entitled to them.
If you like a certain band then **** everyone else even if the populace don't like them they do something for you so stick with it. If I judged my music taste on others views then I wouldn't listen to anything. People are twats really. |

I think too many people take criticism of their taste too personally.
I think people are just giving you **** when they're criticizing your taste in music. Just do the same thing to them. |
I think it comes with experience. Music is going to be judged on, through the listener, and all of that jazz. People who listen to a wide variety of music tend to identify weaknesses in certain aspects.
Nickelback for example: musical aficianados may find their chord progressions and musicianship lacking, spurring their dislike. Fans of, like, Nick Drake, Tim Buckley, or Richard Howard may see the lyricism os lacking and ridicule that. It's objective, but it is based upon experience. |
