Nirvana vs. Foo Fighters

Of the two bands most popular bands that Dave Grohl is/was a permanent member of, which do you guys like more? Personally, for me it varies depending on what mood I'm in, but the Foo Fighters are a bit more to my preference. What do you guys think?

CrazyVegn 06-22-2013 10:29 PM

I voted for Nirvana...

Isbjørn 06-23-2013 01:29 AM

Nirvana. I think they're more unique and have some more emotion. Haven't heard that much from Fighters, though.

Goofle 06-23-2013 04:02 AM

Nirvana are a million times better.

ted23 06-23-2013 10:15 AM

Nirvana. Foo has way too many slow and quiet songs

Zer0 06-23-2013 10:17 AM

What is the point of this?

It's just for fun and comparing of the bands.

Sweet 75

Mojo 06-23-2013 12:10 PM

Theres really nothing other than Dave Grohl to compare with these two bands.

I'd say Nirvana, although Foo Fighters I feel are very good at what they do - commercial, pop rock.

I could easily avoid listening to either band ever again though. I haven't listened to Nirvana since I was about 19, which is nearly 10 years ago.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-23-2013 12:11 PM

Occasionally I'll throw on their appearance at Reading in 1992, other than that I'm pretty much the same with Nirvana.

Mojo 06-23-2013 12:16 PM

Yeah, they were a decent band. I won't knock them or anything. It's just a case of the Yawnsvilles for me now and has been since my Nirvana phase in my teens.

You never know, I may start to listen to them again one day.

Goofle 06-23-2013 12:46 PM

I still love In Utero but could easily never willingly listen to them again.

Mojo 06-23-2013 01:43 PM

I had my Nevermind phase, when I first started listening to Nirvana, but In Utero, in general, was always my favourite too.

Forward To Death 06-23-2013 01:43 PM

Nirvana. Not really even close for me, since I've never been interested in Foo Fighters.

Nevermind is a damn good album, and In Utero is even better. Uhhh, that one album by Foo Fighters wasn't too bad I guess... Yeah, that one album.

Forward To Death 06-23-2013 02:01 PM

Nevermind just has a nice sound, but it's pop.

In Utero is kind of abrasive. It's still pop-sounding in many ways, but it's definitely not on the same level that Nevermind was. I think it's somewhere between Nevermind and Incesticide/Bleach.

djchameleon 06-23-2013 02:30 PM

Nevermind is the only thing that I would willingly listen to from Nirvana and I'm more inclined to listen to a larger variety of Foo Fighter songs back to back but as long as I cherry picked them from different albums.

Thinkofthechildren 06-23-2013 11:47 PM

Foo Fighters are absolutely terrible. Nirvana's quality was I'm guessing 80% Kurt. Grohl and the other guy just stunged around whilst Kurt wrote the songs.

sidewinder 06-24-2013 12:10 PM

Dave Grohl should stay behind the drum kit, or at least go back to it. The Foo Fighters' first two albums were pretty good, but after that there's something about their sound that I can't stand. I don't like his yelling and it just seems constant. STFU.

Nirvana on the other hand, were a great band.

I don't know, I think he can both sing and scream well.

sidewinder 06-24-2013 01:51 PM

Perhaps, I just find him annoying.

Newkie 06-24-2013 03:49 PM

Bit of a strange comparison but Nirvana for me I guess... I think there's probably three or four songs of both I hear from time to time, nights out or what have you but i've not sat down and listened to either in yonks. I'm not too ashamed to say I requested Everlong the other night, always liked that one.

sidewinder 06-25-2013 10:40 AM

I think one thing that separates the two for me is that Nirvana was relevant in their day, whereas Foo Fighters were at first but continue to produce this post-grunge "alternative rock" that, at least to me, has been irrelevant for over a decade.

Now that's not to say we can't enjoy music that isn't relevant to today's trends, don't get me wrong. I don't exactly follow trends when choosing music to listen to. I just feel Foo Fighters and practically all post-grunge bands are just boring radio rock at this point. Nirvana went out on a high note.

NatD 06-26-2013 09:49 PM

Nirvana, undoubtedly.

bflattery 06-27-2013 07:48 AM

I wonder if Kurt was still alive, and say the band broke up. I wonder what his new lineup would sound like.

Onemanrevival 06-27-2013 10:16 AM

I liked Nirvana cause it was new, they changed the view on that style of music to make it popular, so i chose Nirvana..

Foos are class at what they do, There is nothing left to lose is still one of my albums i play frequently :-)

butthead aka 216 06-30-2013 08:57 AM

Nirvana was awesome in a groundbreaking sort of way. I say that not to be some pseudo-edgy 'tard with a nostalgia hard-on, but because they really were. I just really liked that grunge sounds, moreso than I liked the grunge from Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains which I see as much darker and less energetic.

Foo Fighters first 2 CDs were good. After that, I think they kinda turned into background music for me. Nothing they do really sounds all that interesting or new to me anymore, though I think Grohl seems like a cool dude.

I don't think that would happen. First of all, the group was tightknit. Secondly, Kurt didn't really want to be a rock star, so he would've begged the old group to "burn out" for one last concert had they broken up.

UndeadEarth 07-01-2013 05:19 PM

If it wasn't for the death of Kurt Cobain I'm sure Nirvana would have pumped out a few more albums. With that being said Mr. Grohl still produces a somewhat Nirvana-esque style to his music, although it is more up to date than its predecessor

Nirvana had a far more raw sound. He even admits he is nowhere near the song writer Kurt was.

Necromancer 07-01-2013 11:05 PM

Nirvana will always overshadow Dave Grohl's career with the Foo Fighters. I liked Grohl better playing the drums and supporting Cobain on harmony vocals.

That doesn't in anyway suggest that the Foo Fighters aren't a good band though. ;)

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-02-2013 02:22 AM

I don't know where people are getting this idea of Nirvana being around for album after album from.

In Utero had all the hallmarks of a final album, I remember the interviews that Cobain was giving at the time. Once the album was out and they were on tour all Cobain would talk about is that he wanted to work with other people and was excited to be starting a new project with Michael Stipe.
He was pretty much done with Nirvana.

Not only that I don't really see Grohl playing second fiddle to Cobain for much longer than he did and it's obvious that they were both going in different directions Cobain wanted to be more obscure & Grohl wanted to be commercial & radio friendly.

Even if Cobain hadn't died you wouldn't have anymore Nirvana albums.

I am not sure if you read the "diaries" courtney love released that Kurt wrote, but I think their was no way he wouldnt have died. He talks about suicide many times in the writings and even says one time he laid on a train track for hours and the train never ended up coming. he also talks about shooting him self with a shotgun and how easy it would be.

Regarding Grohl and Cobains directions I think you are completely correct. Grohl would have probably still been in the Foo or at least a similar project. Although what ever Cobain did next sure would be interesting. What I would give to see what he could have made.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-02-2013 03:01 AM

I remember when I heard that Cobain had died, I had a similar feeling that I did when Amy Winehouse died.
It was a kind of feeling that you knew things wouldn't carry on the way they had for much longer and that 'something' was about to end, and it was more of a relief it was over than it was a shock.

Dr_Rez 07-02-2013 03:09 AM

I can't imagine seeing Hendrix in the 60s and having my mind utterly blown, then seeing him die while forming the Band of Gypsies and starting to make some of the craziest music ever written.

Just curious (I was too young to really remember well) if you remember exactly where you were when you heard the news, and how you found out. (regarding Nirvana)

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-02-2013 03:30 AM

I'd just finished my weeks work around 5.30 on the friday and walked home, just as I got in the house my mother called me into the living room where she was watching it on the news and she said something like 'Don't you have some of his records?'.
So I told her I did, watched the news for about half an hour then went off to go start my weekend.
Like I said, I wasn't all that surprised by it.

Astronomer 07-02-2013 03:53 AM

I was 6 or 7 years old when Kurt Cobain died, but my mum was a huge Nirvana fan. I have really early childhood memories of her playing In Utero while doing the housework. So I still remember the day it was all over the news, with my mum watching. One of those inevitable things I guess, like Rez said...

I barely remember anything before the age of like 12. I dont know how people remember so much from being a little kid.

I remember lots before the age of 12! I think I can go back to about 4 years old but not much before then...

I'm the same way pretty much. There is only one or two memories that I can remember from before then.

Just another rock star cliche.
