I personally find the Foo Fighters to be really boring conventional rock, so Nirvana all the way.

Alice in Chains 07-06-2013 07:04 AM

I cannot believe this is even a thread.

Foo Fighters. They're good. Great, even. And yeah, they got to make more albums than Nirvana did given the circumstances but I hardly even consider them comparable. More comparable, is Alice in Chains to Nirvana or Stone Temple Pilots.

My opinion might be biased because Kurt is one of my favorites but anyways. My favorite FF albums in order are:

The Colour and the Shape
Foo Fighters
In Your Honor
There Is Nothing Left to Lose
Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace
One By One
Wasting Light

And of course, Nirvana:
Nevermind
In Utero
Bleach

Both great bands. But still hardly comparable.

djchameleon 07-06-2013 07:25 AM

hmm I don't think I can talk to you anymore if you have Wasting Light at the bottom of your list.

Lizzilee 07-06-2013 07:41 AM

I can appreciate both but I prefer Foo Fighters....

Oops.

Those, too. Eddie's voice is a little higher pitched than Kurt's but Soundgarden definitely. They're both pretty similar, regardless so yes.

Guybrush 07-06-2013 05:54 PM

I used to love Nirvana back in the day, but after getting my fill and then some, they've pretty much lost their appeal to me. Kurt Cobains voice is grating and the subject matter of the songs is not as interesting as it once was. I recently listened to the MTV live record again for the first time in 10+ years and the songs I like the most now are the covers. Kurt just comes across as a humourless douche, completely bored with life, which I guess he was. I think I liked that about him once, but now it annoys me.

I'd rather listen to Foo Fighters, even if I don't know them that well. Unlike Kurt, Grohl seems like a highly likeable person.

I haven't talked to her as of yet, but I agree with this statement haha! Wasting light is an amazing album, back to grassroutes and on the old tape system. Class!

To be honest, The Colour and the Shape is really the only FF album I can stomach listening to the whole way through. I don't exactly dislike their other albums but other than two or three songs from each they're very forgettable.

No denying that.

jonkase 07-10-2013 05:22 AM

I like foo fighters better, better sound in my opinion.

AllThatI'veGot 07-12-2013 04:55 AM

Ugh Nirvana Forever and always! The Foo Fighters will never be as know unless Dave kills himself..

Dude, you're cool for a The Used username and I dig your style because you love Nirvana. And of course, it's your opinion but that a little bit of an insensitive statement.

Basically this. I'm open to the other albums and they're not too bad but The Colour and the Shape just has more likeable (and memorable) songs on it than the rest, that's why it's at number 1 on mine. Glad someone agrees, thanks.

Hey, I can respect that. Whatever you dig, you dig. Not up to me but it is up to you and if you liked that album then rock on, buddy.

Definitely. I wonder what people would have thought of them if Kurt hadn't killed himself. Possibly, they would've broken up and Grohl would've founded FF or something like it and Kurt would've kept on solo or with a different band, releasing post-Nirvana stuff with declining quality as artists generally do. Nirvana would be seen as important, but perhaps a little less overrated than it is now.

dukethenuke 07-17-2013 04:47 PM

That is such an easy one! Nirvana all the way! Dave Grhoul road off of Kurt Cobain into stardom. Also Dave said that he learned his song writing from Kurt. there sound is so different. The Foo Fighters sound so commercial compared to Nirvana.

Is this how they speak in LA?

I can confirm that most of LA sounds exactly like that. And they prefer Hole to Nirvana and the FF.

StateOfGrace 08-14-2013 11:07 AM

Foo!!

The_Rocker 08-15-2013 02:51 AM

I like them both, but it has to be Nirvana.

blackdragon123 08-15-2013 04:53 AM

Gonna have to be unpopular here and say that I actually strongly dislike both bands. I never got into them and I doubt I ever will.

Nirvana sound like a psychological experiment, whereby a sleepwalking man was transported into a studio and exposed to various guitar noises, before having his vocal reactions recorded and dispatched for profit.

And every Foo Fighters song seems to follow the same pattern, whereby Grohl will repeatedly shout the chorus a little bit louder than he previously did.

I once listened to Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace on a plane and was violently ill as a result.

The Boy Sebastian 09-13-2013 11:55 PM

What's with all the hate for the Foos on here? Damn. I voted for the Foo Fighters. I like Nirvana a lot too, but I'll listen to a Foo Fighters album more than a Nirvana one on occasion.

Slothinator 09-16-2013 05:15 PM

Nirvana is overrated just because it almost killed off both rock and metal, but Cobain blowing his brains out really made them a brillaint band, just as Queen got legendary when Mercury died. Stupid if you ask me, musically speaking Foo fighters by far.

IvanMC 09-16-2013 10:46 PM

Overall content, as it were, Foo Fighters are better, right; Kurt wasn't Steve Vai on the guitars. Krist Novoselic wasn't Bryan Beller either. But Nirvana were more original; their melodies were richer. In my humble opinion, Nirvana were hugely better than F. Fighters. So I went with Kurt's band.

Sharkie 09-26-2013 08:18 PM

I'll have to go with Nirvana.

I have heard a few songs from them both (just more Nirvana) and it can't be compared. Foo Fighters are alright, but Nirvana is way better.

Nirvana's songs just cut deep really deep. They have some kind of emotional appeal to me, and they're well made, but I can't say the same about FF, although they do have some good songs.

Absolutely! 100% in agreement!

ShopVacAbortion 09-27-2013 06:26 AM

Nirvana. The Foo Fighters are just another commercial rock band, they have some alright tunes, but nothing really all that special.

If Nirvana only released Nevermind, I would agree.

Songs like Hairspray Queen, AeroZeppelin, Mexican Seafood, and Endless Nameless are far from commerical rock songs.

As far as I'm concerned that's all Nirvana is to me is Nevermind.

Seb11 10-02-2013 11:50 PM

Foo Fighters! I prefer their more polished and produced sound.

ashtrayogdc 10-17-2013 07:33 PM

Nirvana all the way some of the best music ever made

Dulce 11-06-2013 09:05 AM

Nirvana. rest in peace, Kurt Cobain.

Definitely Foo fighters!

We need a new Nirvana to get rid of bands like the Foo Fighters.
The Foo Fighters remind me of Bon Jovi and Winger.

In all honesty, I don't find Foo Fighters to be all that bad, Dave Grohl is a stand up dude and deserves the fame he gets. And, a new Nirvana? If that were possible, a new Nirvana wouldn't come close to the influence that the original had since they were part of the rise of grunge. I don't think we can have another rise of grunge unless it totally died and everyone forgot about it.

edwardc77 11-07-2013 01:02 PM

It doesn't have to be grunge, just a great rock band with integrity, honesty.....and amazing songs!

Black Francis 11-07-2013 02:29 PM

I think FF is good but i prefer Nirvana.

And why don't the Foo Fighters have integrity and honesty? Some of their songs explore some worries Grohl has ("Hey Johnny Park") or denounce people who have wronged him ("Let It Die" is almost universally agreed to be about Courtney Love). Dave is just a generally happier guy than Kurt ever was, so his songs tend to be happier. Is happier less honest? No. And to be fair, Nirvana has plenty of songs that aren't too serious about real experiences ("Drain You"), but they're looked at with a more depressing point of view.

Taxman 11-10-2013 10:17 PM

Well, I appreciate Dave but Kurt was more talented as a songwriter.
