How one can really completely understood music anyway, and what does understanding music mean? I don't know, but maybe it shouldn't have been tried at all.
|
You could stay that interpreting the lyrics in whatever way you see fit is understanding the music, and you could say that understanding what instruments are creating a sound is understanding the music. There's plenty to understand about music, and if you aren't understanding something about it, then maybe you're just wasting your time. You should at least know why you're listening to the music you listen to, right? I think part of that is understanding the music to some degree.

You can understand music in a technical way, if you know theory enough but you can also understand it in an other way. The most important thing in music is not on the notebook, mid you. Of course, everyone understands this side of music differently, which means that one particular song can have a different meaning to different people and they may be opposite to the composers'. Is that understanding? Maybe not. So I'd rather say, you can't understand, you can only interpret it, and everyone solves the code differently.
But surely you can understand music perfectly from the technical point of view, you can say "this chord is an A minor" and nobody can disagree with your conclusion. However, that is not the most important aspect... , how can one misunderstand Nirvana's music then, like I wrote, I honestly do not know. Maybe I should have said that most of them interpret it differently than I. But you know, everyone feels the same but just sees it from a different point of view, so I really can't tell. Never mind. |
And when it comes to why I listen to something, I don't know, it sounds good? That's not enough, I want some emotional response too, but what someone gets from something is kinda personal.

Foo Fighters
Foo Fighters, all the way.
Nirvana just doesn't have the grip on me like the Foo Fighters do. However, I still find myself getting down to some old school Nirvana every once in awhile... :) |
I would totally be ready to support Foo Fighters in this (Been a while since I posted here), but there's one problem...I've listened to 2 of Nirvana's 3 studio albums, as well as their unplugged record. I've heard 1 of the Foo's studio albums and own their Greatest Hits. So I have to stick up for Nirvana here, but that's just because I don't have a good enough grasp on the Foo's. "Wasting Light" was amazing.

I can safely say in this thread that Dave Grohl plays for both teams
|
I think both bands are good although I have never been a big fan of either.
But I think Nirvana has had a bigger influence and impact on music. |
I like Foo Fighters more. I'm not a fan of Nirvana in the least, but I can understand and respect why he is held in such high regards.
