Black Sabbath - God Is Dead? thoughts
Well, we were talking in the Black Sabbath album thread about how the belief is this won't be their best album yet. Which of course is a given.
But what do you think of their new single? See most versions of the song without the "I Heart Radio on Demand" thing intact were removed. But I am sure you can find it, do your own searching. I am just happy I extracted the audio from the video before it was deleted. haha. Anyway. I think it is a good single, not great.. could easily fit on an Ozzy solo album and be just as good. Doesn't scream Black Sabbath to me as much as I thought it would. But I still think it is a decent enough track. |
Okay, here is one without that annoying I Heart Radio ad.

Fuck me, that's wank :(

Ok hate me if you please but to be quite frank, this is the only Sabbath song I felt was boring. The song is way to long for what it is. To me it screams a rip off of Black Sabbath the song, but incredibly slow and bland. It may be a grower though, it definitely sounds like something that would grow on me. I was quite shocked to realize that Ozzy voice was low xD I completely forgot about all his solo stuff going into the song and forgot it's been quite a long time since these guys made a song together.

I like almost everything Sabbath ****z out so im game
|
I know it is Rick Rubin's sole purpose on Earth to create music with the world's flattest production, but wow. This sounds like listening to Black Sabbath on a iPhone speaker. And, for an 8 minute song, it's too freakin long to be this simple.
But, considering this was picked as the promo track/single (with I Heart Radio's hand involved I'm sure) I'm interested to hear what the rest of the album will have. If this was the most accessible, radio ready track on the album, maybe we'll get some of that old Black Sabbath we know and love will be on the rest of the album... |

I love the new Sabbath song. It sounds like old Sabbath, but it's like they started from where they left off in the late 70s and progressed that sound.
I'm not much of a fan of Ozzy's solo ****..I really liked his first album, then it just doesn't do it for me. But ever since Black Rain, I've absolutely loved what he's put out. As much as I'm angry about Ward not being in the mix, there was a point in the song where I forgot it wasn't him on drums. Very nicely done, that earned my pre-order. :hphones: P.S.: I GOT TICKETS TO SEE THEM IN WASHINGTON THIS SUMMER!!!!!!!!!!! |

Im excited about the new Sabbath stuff. They probably arent at that point in their career where they feel the need to push the boundaries or anything but its nice to hear from the band that has done so much for metal.
|
I like it and preordered the deluxe set because of it. Can't wait to hear the whole thing!

After 1 listen through, I like it. Very familiar and endearing to me. They have their formula, and it still works. The only crit I have is that Tony's solo was a bit thin sounding. Dunno, could be that I haven't listened to BS in quite a while now, and this has motivated me to make a compilation CD with this kicking it off. Looking forward to the release in it's entirety.

Another new one. Live, but still good enough to hear it:

I really enjoyed this single. It's refreshing to hear Ozzy's voice sound as grizzled and as raw as it does. To accuse Sabbath of engaging in cliche is a little bit laughable in itself. Butler's lyrics have always been limited to a few choice themes, this is evident all the way through the 70s, if the lyrics adopted the philosophical ambitions of Pink Floyd, the same people would accuse Sabs of being pretentious. I'm excited to see what else 13 will have to offer, i just hope the majority of fans can look beyond the "no Bill, no Sabbath" mantra and appreciate good music for what it is

I, for one, expected that so many years later, the writing and guitar playing would have advanced. I would have been much more supportive if I had known that this came out back in the day.
|
Oh, and I forgot to mention ... Rick Rubin is the king of rock production. That is all.

I don't really understand the hype about Rick Rubin's production.
All he does is get over the hill artists to try to do what made them good in the first place & everybody hails the guy as a musical genius. Hell I could do that if you gave me the chance. Lock me in a studio with Stevie Wonder. I'll slap him around a bit & use a few racial slurs to get him as angry as he was in the early 70s, grab him hard by the nuts & ask him if he still has anything left in there. I swear after a few months of that he won't feel like singing Ebony & Ivory or I Just Called To Say I Love You. |

Everyone's a critic, but hey they really respect your talent. Have your manager call my manager, and we'll make records together. At this level of success in entertainment, there are certain connotations. It's a "you give we take" relation. No the kids wouldn't understand it. Come on now, how long do think this is really gonna last? How long can you hold their attention before they move on to the next band? On the inside. On the inside. On the inside. Do you wanna know how it feels on the inside? On the inside. On the inside. On the inside. Do you wanna know how it feels on the inside? Coordinate the marketing, label, publicity, touring. Consult on, timing and presentation. Go ahead put this in context. It's 3 points on production, 15% to management, 10% to the agent, 5% to legal representation. We call it our insurance plan to stretch the inevitable as far as we can. Gotta make your money while you got the chance, do whatever it takes to sell it. On the inside. On the inside. On the inside. Do you wanna know how it feels on the inside? On the inside. On the inside. On the inside. Do you wanna know how it feels on the inside? (Let's go) Just how desperate can we be? The middle section is killer and let's not forget that for anyone under 35 that's your grandfather banging out that sound and how cool would that be? Put into context though there are two main problems with the track, Bill Ward is missing. The guy somehow played his drum tracks behind the main riff and not along with it and his drum sound is definitely missing. The drum track is far too clean. Ward's snare sound almost sounded like a bass drum at times and that heavy thud is sorely missed. However, a band that is well over 40 years old making a decent stab of it is something to be commended and if they deviated massively from their sound there would be a lot more fans crying sell out or hating them for trying something new so they they are oddly in a lose lose situation. I would still rather hear this than the latest Rolling Stones album and it's OK for them to churn out 6th hand Blues riffs and demand £250 for a ticket when they play live. Bring back Bill Ward and simplify the production and Sabbath can still knock your socks off (I Hope!) |

When's the album due out?
|
June 11th in North America, the 10th in Europe.

Also i kinda liked the song. It's kinda like a mix of Sabotage hard rock with the early atmospheric, super doom material. I think the new drummer is the reason for the hard rock emphasis. Also, Ward's bass sounds looser and dirtier than i ever remember it sounding, maybe it's just production though. The solos weren't great, but the song structure itself was pretty strong, well crafted anyway. The big shift or "liftoff" that they always bring wasn't as strong as before maybe but it was still nice, and the lyrical shift there was pretty nice. The first verse actually wasn't bad, and his vocal melody throughout was snazzy. A big "alright guys" out of five from this reporter. |
