I really wanted to name them, but my favorite vocal performances by them are mostly just Droste's contribution, with a little backing here and there. Maybe I'm just missing it, or maybe its more prominent on stuff besides Shields, which is honestly the only one i'm fully familiar with.

This band don't really belong in this sub forum but The Magic Numbers debut album is so good and tragically overlooked as a flavour of the month when it came out in the mid 2000's. It holds up so well.
Pure Reason Revolution may float your boat too:

All of these are definitely solid, although Damn Yankees gives me pause on principle. The harmonies were undeniable though.
Very surprised no one has mentioned The Mamas and the Papas, as their whole deal is so immersed in their vocal harmonies. And very good ones, at that. And Peter Paul and Mary:

Keeping in the same vein, the Grateful Dead had some stellar harmonies, especially this little acapella chestnut here: |

Good call on Animal Collective, whoever that was. They really channel their inner Beach Boys on some songs.
I love the call and response on My Girls this song, though weaker in general, has better harmonies IMO Last edited by RVCA; 05-01-2013 at 07:29 PM. |
