I can't stand people who try and rank a guitar players ability. There are a multitude of different ways to play the instrument. Is the world's greatest funk or traditional guitar player discredited because he can't shred? What about classical or spanish style playing? How do you judge one playing style against another?
The Edge wouldn't be a suitable candidate for playing in a band such as Gojira or Metallica, but for what he does with U2 - it's perfect. It's exactly what they need.

It's all relative.
