Sub genres are also useful for describing a bands sound to someone, or just finding similar music.

Agreed, subgenre is very relevant to those of us seeking 'bands similar to' on a regular basis. Genres are really just musical adjectives to assist in conversation, so people don't have to consistently describe bands as how similar or dissimilar they sound to other specific bands.
