I don't know where to begin
i feel really stupid doing this, but i don't know where to turn!! I've been writing song lyrics since i was in 3rd grade, i am now 18 and i want to put music to my lyrics, i don't play any insturments- i wana learn the guitar- its just that my family has never been very supportive- so i've never had the opportunity, they've always kept me from it-but i am planning on learning when i go to college-but lyrics have always been my thing
....if there's any musicians out there with spare time, i'd love for you to play around with my lyrics .... i've been told that they are good... i just wana see and hear what could be done with my lyrics- i wana finish the process and hear the lyrics as songs.... i know this all prob sounds really stupid, but if there's anyone out there that can relate...Reply! thanks much. |

Not Stupid at all
It's all very much within your reach. Do you like to read? You can get a quality musical education on your own. Your only expense: books and a keyboard. I'll recomend any inexpensive keyboard. Make sure the keys are piano sized.
Listen, you're so young. 18. perfect time to start. Don't cheat yourself out of the complete creative experience. Just think about the feeling of creating an entire original piece that is all your own. Learning all there is to know about the piano gives you priceless knowledge touching on every aspect of music. The book I started with; The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory It all seems so overwhelming and out-of-reach, but the truth is, it's not as complicated as you might think. If you have a true passion for the craft of music, you'll probablly find it refreshingly simple and easy. I never thought I would be able to learn to play the Piano, guitar, violin...I was amazed at how easily it all came together...it just takes the drive...you're discipline to practice at LEAST 30 minutes a day. Just search for the book I mentioned on Amazon.com It's a priceless investment that's worth the effort. |

I don't think it sounds stupid at all! I've always wanted to be in a band, and I loooooove to sing! So, I agree with Bleedmusic! Grab the opportunity by the horns, and run with it! You'll only get it once, and you don't wanna be 50 going, '"Damn, why didn't I do that?"'

I'm a guitarist and I also sing, and I would love to help, I'm in Australia but that might be a hassle. Playing music is the best thing thats ever happened to me besides learning how to drive lol. So if you would like some pointers just say so and I'll be glad to help out!

One thing that helps (sometimes) is to just get an instrument (any type is fine), and just start messing around with it. It can be kinda discouraging at first, but after awhile, it can produce a real drive to learn.
There are a ton of good books out there teaching how to play instruments. For me, I learned guitar first (self-taught from a book), went on to keyboard, bass, etc. Once you get one instrument down, its alot easier to learn new ones. They all have alot in common and you can apply the same techniques to all. I would recommend getting a guitar (acoustic is cheaper, but electric is more fun), a good rhythm guitar book that teaches chords and basic music theory, and just sit down and start at it. Your fingers will hurt, you will sound like crap, and you will get discouraged, but keep pressing on. Before you know it, your friends will be like "Wow man, you are great on guitar! You wrote that song?". Just takes alot of work. Hope this helps in some way!
