What about Suicidal Tendencies? Too much melody?

I've been wondering about "crossover". There are a few bands like Suicidal Tendencies and DRI who legitimately "crossed over" from being punk bands to being metal bands, but describing a band like Nuclear Assault or Sacred Reich as crossover seems a bit absurd to me, since just about any thrash band has some punk influences, there's were just more obvious. The whole concept of calling something "crossover" just sorta sounds like it has more to do with meathead metal fans back in the day who were too ignorant of anything besides metal to realize that a band like Slayer were heavily influenced by punk, so when bands with more obvious punk influences come along, all of a sudden it's something that needs a name, like "crossover". Any thoughts, or am I off base?

Yeah, I think crossover specifically referred to hardcore bands who added more metal into the mix over time. I don't remember anyone calling Nuclear Assault or Sacred Reich crossover at the time. It was strictly reserved for the likes of DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, Corrosion of Conformity, etc.

And the term's just been co-opted by the younger generation who've changed it to mean something it never meant?

I guess. I chalk it up to the same terminology drift that has somehow made younger people redefine Faith No More as not metal and a "pit" as a "mosh pit".

So is crossover basically metal without the references to Satan's hordes raping your eye sockets?

Nope. Crossover is music played by hardcore bands in the 80s who were incorporating thrash into their sound. Like this:
