That stuff is fine! Revenge is a bit long, and is got some serious grindcore thingy happening. Nocturnal Hell is thrashier and a bit more my style. But these groups are completely different beasts in comparison to Darkthrone and their legions of clones. What Darkthrone had going for them was the use of ethereal melodies, which made their music sound a little more sinister to my ears.

Never could get my mitts around Emperor, either.

Except for Emperor, the whole 90s norwegian sound is, to me, the musical equivalent of riding a roller coaster that goes really really fast in a straight line for two hours.

Other than that, I love first wave black metal (as well as modern black/thrash), and many other black-influenced bands such as Deströyer 666, Behemoth, God Dethroned, Hate, Angelcorpse, etc.

Also, when it's late at night, and I can't sleep, I'll turn on Xasthur once in a while.

Meh. Their early stuff just never clicked with me, though I love their new punked up black metal direction. If I'm going for that whole early Norwegian thing, Burzum's first album is superior.

Some bands with some Black Metal material I like include Ulver, Rotting Christ, Watain, Windir, Mistur, Cor Scorpii, Wolves in the Throne Room, Sigh (though they're more avant garde Black Metal) and a number of others.

Not sure if my 20year+ love of playing Black Metal has any advantages in offering advise but would recommend with these albums as a possible start (Norway does hold a very good collection of early influential albums):

emperor - in the nightside eclipse
mayhem - de mysteriis dom sathanas
dimmu borgir - enthrone darkness triumphant
darkthrone - plaguewielder
satyricon - nemesis divina

I'm sure that there is a load of better ones to start with (and more the better), however you can't really go wrong with these as a start point.

I know this isn't going to be a very popular thread and may not see a lot of updates however, I have just ordered a copy of this on CD. I refuse to download this as I know it's going to be a good play.

Sorcier Des Glaces - The Winter Nightsky - YouTube

Also, this web page has some good BM releases Evergrim Recordings

Under the full moon, in Late November, living next to a wooded area, and listening to this. Perfect!

meh, I don't really like that style much. I'd rather listen to something like:

...it just seems much more exhilarating.

recently I stumbled upon an avant-garde balck metal band called Lugubrum, from Belgium. They are from Belgium, and lyrics are in flemish. Quite nice band :
