Without a doubt one of my favorite intros to a song. Great riffs. Growling vocals, and outstanding rhythym sections make me happy.

^ Well, there was some QOTSA self-titled, which is pretty close. Kind of. Though all in all, I pretty much consider Homme to be the godfather, founder, and prime force behind stoner rock as we know it. There's a reason all the good stoner rock bands come from southern California.

My intro to Fu Manchu, and the only Fu Manchu I've heard as a result, was their latest release "Signs of Infinite Power". I see now that was a mistake on my part.

Funeralopolis may be one of my favorite tracks, ever. And how could anyone dislike Queens? After seeing them play their S/T live in its entirety I think it became my favorite Queens record.

My favorite too, it found them at a good time when they were bridging the gap between the sound of Kyuss and the more structured QOTSA. And what, QOTSA hate? Is this real life?

I thought they'd be too synonymous with stoner rock, like mentioning Led Zeppelin in a 70s hard rock thread. But since you brought it up...

My favorite Kyuss song. I love the prog undertones of it

Fu is one of my favorite bands ever, not just within the stoner genre either. Some really great stuff for cruising and raging.

I think you're giving him too much credit. He's definitely one of the primary reasons why the style has broken through the mainstream but groups like Monster Magnet and Fu Manchu had been fuzzing out for years while he was still learning to play Polka tunes on his first guitar.

Really though, as far as godfathers, founders, and prime forces behind stoner rock go it's freaking Black Sabbath and Hawkwind :D

Yes! Ufomammut and Sons of Otis are two of my absolute favorite bands of this kind. And Yob ain't too shabby either.

Yeah, I think Ufomammut would have to be my favourite sludge band, they're just heavier and more intense than the rest.

Think someone mentioned Fu Manchu earlier. They are amazing. Love their sound on early albums.

Faustcoven - At Night They Rise from the Earth --- they're self described black doom metal. There's a very, very effective riff in this song - not throughout the entire length of it, but when you hear it, you'll smile, and thank me.




Coffins - Sacrifice to Evil Spirit ---- death/doom from Japan.




Habsyll - I ---- experimental extreme metal stuff. I have this on tape, because I am awesome.

I can't post links, but Isis' album Oceanic and their album Panopticon are both just completely mindblowing.

Also... only 1 mention of Melvins?? Houdini? and Bullhead? come on!

I've been listening to both albums at work recently, they're ok. I prefer Two Hunters by Wolves in the Throne Room but they're all leaning away from the psychedelic part of the stoner style. Also... Pelican trumps Isis. :p:

Oceanic and Panopticon aren't sludge/stoner metal at all, it's the pre-Oceanic stuff that sounds like sludge metal. Those two are post-metal/prog metal, way too atmospheric to really be sludge metal.

I was just listening to Budgie's first album, and the first song off that album is just one of the greatest stoner/sludge rock/metal songs I've ever heard.

are you alright with proto-doom?

All great stuff, though it's kind of hilarious you don't consider those modern doom, and that you refer to straight doom bands mentioned by Howard as "proto-doom".

This song plods past me with knife in hand, bloodshot eyes staring wildly as it contemplates the worst.

I just picked up "Dopesmoker" by Sleep in HMV. Great record.
