I think you guys are wasting time arguing on the wrong word. I've never really thought of SoaD as anything more than a hard rock outfit with some experimental/ punk leanings.

Yeah they're similar to Suicidal Tendencies especially, seeing as they're a hardcore outfit that also, like SOAD, has dramatic dynamic shifting. That ain't prog. Never will be to anyone who knows what prog is. Either way it's really not worth arguing to any extent further.

Dig Rishloo's first two releases: Terras Fames and Eidolon.

They're maybe not my favorite, just started listening today, sounds Tool-inspired, but doesn't mimic them.

You're absolutely right about Rishloo, Forward to Death. Even their newest release is well done. All their work. Eidolon is probably their best, though.

I'm actually really getting into these three albums, real proggy with poetic and thought-provoking lyrics. Hard not to compare them to Tool, which is one of my top five bands of all time probably.

Second Life Syndrome by Riverside is fantastic.
Oceanic by Isis if you want some post-metal
The Mantle by Agalloch, folky post black metal with a heavy avant-garde/prog presence
The Human Equation by Ayreon, sort of a who's who of prog metal

Opeth, Mastodon, Meshuggah, Pain of Salvation

Kalisia's Cybion, its a sci-fi concept album with futuristic and operatic sounds coating an extremely fine death metal

If that's the case, a lot of hardcore/crossover/metalcore bands are progressive. I guess you could think that it's intricate, and subjectively be right about anything. However, this is like calling Godsmack grunge because they copy 90% of what they do from Alice In Chains.

Has this been mentioned yet?

the only thing I can fault it for is that the lyrics are sometimes hokey, but hell, I don't listen to metal for the lyrics
