Well, there aren't a whole lot of bands labeling themselves "grunge" any more, but I hear tell Boston has a great hardcore punk scene, which in my opinion is pretty close to what you're probably looking for. I don't know if Give Up The Ghost is still playing or not, but they were pretty good. I think there's a band called Razors in the Night who formed a couple of years ago that might be worth checking out. I'd also recommend Darkbuster, they seem like a fun show.

yeah i totally get what you mean, besides pearl jam, grunge is essentially dead. but thanks for the bands!!

Well, I'm sure there's in general a lot of Alternative Rock bands who aren't completely terrible. I just think most bands are hesitant to call themselves "grunge" these days, so I'm sure there's a lot of good material out there that's essentially the same thing.
