Best Fleetwood Mac Album

In your opinion, what is the best Fleetwood mac album?

My selection would be "Tango in the night".
It would be interesting to know your opinion.

Great album and one of my favourite AOR albums from the 1980s, but best album still has to go to Rumours, one of the most sublime albums ever recorded.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and Mr. Wonderful....

sopsych 05-01-2012 07:34 PM

There's no ongoing Fleetwood Mac thread?

I too think Tango in the Night is the best Mac album.

RVCA 05-01-2012 07:39 PM

What is this madness? Rumours straight up poops on everything else, although Tusk and the second self-titled are great too.

This. Though, admittedly, it's not like I've listened to their whole discography.

RVCA 05-02-2012 12:04 AM

I mean, I've listened to some Peter Greenwood stuff and some post-Nicks stuff... but none of it is very good. At least, none of it beats the Buckingham-Nicks output.

Big Ears 05-02-2012 01:39 AM

Greatest Hits 30th Anniversary Edition, originally from 1971, but reissued in 2002. The Buckingham-Nicks version of the band is very good, but I still prefer Peter Green's FM. I liked the Rick Vito/Billy Burnette version too, in their own right and because they went back to playing the Peter Green material. Black Magic Woman, Man of the World and Oh, Well are great songs in my opinion.

The best three FM albums are:
1) Rumours
2)Tango in the Night
3) Fleetwood Mac

Parts of Tusk are great but for a double album its just good and not great, which is slightly disappointing really given that double albums in the 1970s, were usually seen as the creative pinnacle by the bands that were lucky enough to be given the chance to record one.

ladyislingering 05-02-2012 10:52 AM

I'll always have a preference for "Rumours". It's one of those albums I always cite as something that completely changed my life.

It is a life changing album, every track is absolutely essential, its one of those albums that comes around every decade. It easily makes my top 10 favourite all time albums. The word stunning doesn't even do the album justice.

tojamm 05-02-2012 10:16 PM

I'd like to know what your opinion about the album "Mirage" is. Is it top 3?

Big Ears 05-03-2012 01:12 AM

I'm not sure but Allmusic give it three out of five stars.

"Mirage" is so chill. The only reason I picked it up is because I really loved the song "Hold Me" but I grew to really love the entire album upon listening through it a few times.

It's one of the only albums I know in which every song has touched me in some way or another. It never fails to be relevant to me.

The best thing about Mirage is the album cover with Lindsey being sandwiched in-between two hot women. Music wise its disappointing and I find the album lacks any real substance, its not terrible but Fleetwood Mac were capable of so much more.

TheNiceGuy 05-04-2012 07:48 AM

Eh, never been huge on Fleetwood Mac. However Rumours is certainly a gold standard pop/rock album, and it certainly deserves all the kudos it gets.

sopsych 05-05-2012 12:37 PM

Christine McVie was never "hot." I have the Mirage album. "Gypsy" and "Hold Me" are strong songs. The other tracks I've listened to are lousy by comparison. Behind the Mask actually is a better album than Mirage.

Such a gem that covers the Peter Green era so well and for a while they were the best Blues Rock band in the U.K. (this is the CBS years version and not their music from the 70's onwards).

Some of the stuff on Rumours is really, really good and Buckingham is very underrated as a guitarist (The Chain for example) and there are some really good tunes on Tango In The Night especially the title track but nothing will ever surpass Oh Well from the Green era.

This is part two of Oh Well which is superb and not really known unless you listen to their early stuff.

Judas Priest covered The Green Manalishi but the original is far better, once again from the Green era.

It is hard not to argue with this live performance of Rhiannon though. God damn Stevie Nicks could sing her ass off:

cledussnow 05-09-2012 11:37 AM

They are SO different at every incarnation. It is almost unfair to lump it all as "Fleetwood Mac" .

Peter Green's version was great. Solid Blues rock and I like almost all of it. After he left and Bob Welch joined they released "Future Games". What a great album, yet so completely different than anything they had done before. Like a whole different band. "Sentimental Lady" off Bare Trees was great, and a better version than Welch's solo version a few years later, which is the one most people know from the 70s.

Then Kirwan left and Welch was pretty much the leader at that point. I really like the song "Hypnotized" with that lineup. They released only 2 with Welch at the helm, and then he left and enter Buckingham/Nicks.

Again a radically different sounding band emerged with 1975's self-titled album. Another great album followed by probably the best FM album of all, Rumours. I agree with whoever said Top 10 of all time. So diverse and very good all the way through.

Plankton 05-09-2012 11:49 AM

Been listening to FM for decades, and I have to say Rumors, with The Dance in close second, although I haven't heard ALL their stuff, I'll have to base that on what I have heard which is most of it. From a guitar players standpoint, I always have to give props to Lindsey, who is an incredible picker:

...and one of my favorite obscure tracks:

KateEliza 05-09-2012 09:54 PM

Rumors... it's the first album my mum gave me. Nostalgic.

Howard the Duck 05-10-2012 02:49 AM

Rumors, obviously

i quite like Tusk also

^ Hey, I used to enjoy that same album, with its gate-fold sleeve ! Yes, it`s a good collection of all the best Peter Green songs.

These days, though, having over-played those classic recordings, I prefer this album:-

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...veinboston.jpg

...which is actually 4 albums long, all recorded across a weekend stint in 1970. It features longer, looser, less familiar versions of songs like Green Manalishi (clocking in at 13 mins) and a legendary 25-minute version of Rattlesnake Shake; so much material that it should sound fresh to me for a few years yet !

Trollheart 05-19-2012 09:58 AM

Surprised no-one mentioned "Say you will". Okay, so it's a newer album, but I was completely blown away by the quality on it. Great album.

In order then, for me (I've never heard the older stuff, though I've obviously heard the song "Tusk", but not the album)

1. Rumours
2. Tango in the night
3. Mirage
4. Say you will
5. Behind the mask

The last two quite underappreciated in my opinion. Anyone want to rate Stevie's solo work? ;)

BTW if no-one has heard Christine's version of "I'd rather go blind" on "The legendary Christine Perfect album", I can't find it on YT but you really should seek it out. Not much of an album other than that, but worth getting for that track alone.

There is also a Chicken Shack version, with Christine on lead vocals. They also included I'd Rather Go Blind in their BBC session. There may be a Fleetwood Mac version too.

sopsych 05-19-2012 10:25 PM

I only know one or two songs from Say You Will, so I can hardly rate it. Behind the Mask is very underrated, probably because it's without Lindsey and had no big hits (maybe too dark). But the guitar work by his replacements is excellent and the songwriting is right up there with all but probably Rumours. Someday I'm going to start a thread about underappreciated major releases, and that's the one I will list first.

crowhue 05-20-2012 01:25 PM

Tango In The Night was a bit more my era than Rumours and definitely a wicked album. Great guitar playing, sons, vocals. Fantastic.

saabrinnnaa 05-22-2012 11:51 AM

Rumours is my favorite FM album by default. My favorite album Art is on 'Heroes are hard to find'... Oh, and, uh... F*ck Christie McVie!!

saabrinnnaa 05-22-2012 11:54 AM

Their self titled album is a close second! I even listen to 'sugar daddy', although How can CM sing next to SN?!

All three singers compliment each other perfectly, whilst Nicks brought a raunchy power, McVie brought melodic clarity. Fleetwood Mac were great because of these differences.

Howard the Duck 05-22-2012 08:00 PM

i hate Tango in the Night, sorry

helenkaops 05-27-2012 01:30 AM

Rumours or maybe their eponymous album from 1975.

Chives 05-27-2012 12:30 PM

Tusk. I just get lost in that album. The drum sound they achieve on it is really awesome.

My parents wouldn't exactly give me Rumours but I needn't have asked, they played it faithfully, I didn't complain, it's pretty intoxicating.

And you know an album's good when your parents hammered it throughout your childhood and you still come out the otherside with a place in your music library for it.

the_Koolaid_Guy 06-09-2012 10:05 PM

I think Tusk was the best album. Rumours was great, too, though. And Peter Green's work on the Blue Horizons work was mind blowing.

ThePhanastasio 06-10-2012 12:25 AM

Rumours

I really...it's Rumours.

blastingas10 06-10-2012 02:30 AM

I kinda leaN towards the original Mac but both are really good

TheTremulants 06-10-2012 05:27 AM

Looks like Rumours wins again
