I guess this is just not my cup of tea... but if you are going to do the "Halloween costumes with religious overtones" thing, I would really suggest two things:
1) like someone said above - learn to play your instruments first. There are a lot of bands out there that trade talent for a gimmick. 2) Try to have some point beyond just "I want to shock people" or "People will think it's cool". Thinking about why you are delivering what you deliver makes the difference for me. I may not like Marilyn Manson, but I get that the religious imagery is designed to be a commentary on the hypocrisy of modern Christianity. I have mixed feelings about Slipknot (Corey Taylor actually isn't half bad as a lyricist, if you can get past some of his horrible cliches), but when they explain that they dress in masks because they believe their own personalities don't matter to the process, I get it. David Bowie went years as Ziggy Stardust, but the whole thing served as a commentary on the process of fame and the disenchantment of the music industry. Then you get a band like Mudvayne who realise they don't need the getup because they're actually decent musicians in their own right (especially their bass player, but their vocalist proved he had chops beyond the average nu-metaller as well). Getting back to it, if its a gimmick for the sake of a gimmick, why do you need it? What do you serve, beyond looking "cool", by forming a band around this concept? I suspect what you think "looks cool" now may not stand the test of time... |
