Can't forget Mr. John Drumbo French, he did some amazing work with the Captain.
The whole song has virtuosic drumming but the orgasm of a drum solo occurs at around 1:50.

Agreed, that's one of the reasons why I would put Jimmy Chamberlin in the top 5 of any Awesome drummers list. Chamberlin was a touring jazz drummer for several years before he jumped into rock music. His jazz influence and dizzying snare work is one of the biggest factors in the (original)Smashing Pumpkins sound and he definitely has his own distinctive style which is really hard to accomplish at this point in rock music history.

Mitchell had some jazz in his style. He was great.
I'm going to add levon helm since he passed away today. He wasn't all that technical but I really like some of drumming and he was a great singer. May he rest in peace, such a sad day. Ill also add the duo of jaimoe johannson and butch trucks. |

Both Chad Smith (RHCP) and Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiciton) should be on that list.
I'd also like to make the case for Alex Thomas. He's not a name I'd seen much around before. More of a studio session guy, he's played with a bunch of people, notably Bolt Thrower, Air, and Squarepusher. From thrash metal, to mellow electronica, to... spazzy neo-jazz? This dude is a machine |
