Megadeth = an extraordinary amount of Deth. They don't even need to use an "a" in death because you know what they mean so why waste logo space? Metallica makes as much sense as psychedelia or electronica. It just means a whole bunch of metal packaged together. Okay, so maybe they're goofy names but if they're cheesy then Devil's Train is aerosal cheese.

Surprised to see such unfounded judgement based purely on a band's name. Some metal bands have ridiculous names but doesn't mean they're crap bands. I'm particularly taken aback by Engine's assertion that since their name is "goofy" their music must be too. Way to give a band a chance guys: ever heard of not judging a book by its cover?
Anyway, for those who haven't heard them this is what Devil's Train sounds like...

For those who want to know why I say this, here's a list of qualitative reasons that my prediction was right, based on the song you posted above: 1. It opens with a pick slide followed by a lifeless, generic metal riff. 2. Fifteen seconds in, the singer displays his goofy vocals that remind me of all the singers that I hate from the 1990s. 3. Thirty seconds in, the singer raises his voice and the guitars back it up with some slightly heavier riffing that sounds straight out of 1990s college radio (i.e. the more radio-friendly grunge bands). 4. The pace builds for about one minute when the band reverts to the sing-songy Eddie Vedder-esque chorus (shudder). 5. At about 1:50 the Mosh Lite part comes in. It sounds goofy and cliched to me but maybe this is totally serious metal to others? 6. 2:05 - a thirty second guitar solo. yay. 7. After that it closes with some more soaring vocals, and a "yeah, mama" or two. I'm not trying to argue Trollheart. You and I don't like the same music. You're right that I was being presumptuous (and I do hate presumptuousness) but, by my standards, the song you posted proves that my presumption was correct.

Actually no it doesn't. I'm not trying to argue with you either, but there's a clear distinction to be made here.
Based on your assumptions the music does not appeal to YOU. Doesn't mean it's bad or that it might not appeal to anyone else. It's rather interesting that you often take me to task for overanalysing music particularly in my reviews, but here you've deconstructed one song to prove your point. I would have been happy if you'd said: based on what I heard my assumption was correct: I don't like it. But to pick the song apart to show how right you were is just being a little, I don't know, over the top as far as I'm concerned. You don't like it. Fine. You've made the assertion you don't like much/any of the music I like. That was proven, in a way, when I took Pet Shop Boys apart and you got angry (in jest I assume) at me for doing so. Just shows that not everyone likes the same thing; would be a boring world if they did. However, harsh as I was on PSB (and I do dislike them intensely, possibly due to my arsehole brother, as per the review) I went out of my way to state, as I do on each "Albums from Hell" slot, that it is my opinion only and further, an opinion formed when I was, shall we say, younger. So I understand and accept you like PSB, they're not for me. On the other hand you put down DT without any qualificiation, ie not for me but some of you might like them. That's what annoys me. Nah, it doesn't annoy me; you're entitled to your opinion but it gets a little under my skin when you make sweeping generalisations like that, as if I don't know what I'm talking about. Granted, much of the time I don't, but on this occasion I'd recommend this band, not as anything wild or groundbreaking or new, but just as a fun band to listen to. I'm not trying to say they're the new Sabbath, Bon Jovi, Guns n Roses or anything, but I think they're ok and I liked the album. Just afford me the courtesy of accepting that though you don't like them, I do and others might, and don't dismiss them out of hand. Then we can remain if not friends then at least cordial enemies...

Actually, it does prove that I was correct 'by my own standards' which I tried not to project as universal standards. Guess I need to work on my writing.

As for what I said in my previous couple posts; Do I really need to attach an "In My Opinion" caveat to everything I post? I like to think that what people post about music is obviously only their own opinion. As for Devil's Train, I was simply trying to demonstrate that I had reasons for assuming that they are crap (in my opinion ) before even having heard them. And that my assumption was right. I did not, as you assert, dismiss them out of hand. Other people may find them to be a sensational band. And I won't make fun of them personally for that (or I'll try my best not to at least). I totally accept that you and possibly others like this band for your own reasons, and I don't mind that at all. I only hate your music, not you. You'd have to do a lot more than like music that I dislike for me to consider you an enemy. Cheers, friend.

Dødheimsgard—Supervillain Outcast This has been on my list of albums to check out since I read a review of it when it came out back 2007 and I've only just now gotten around to giving it a listen. I'm liking it a lot so far. It's a nice electronic-tinged, slightly avant-garde take on black metal that well worth a listen if that's the kind of thing that sounds appealing to you. |

Disclaimer: I dislike and mock the quoted post because it arbitrarily lashes out at nothing important due to the poster's personal unresolved anger problem.
