And this is where I play the ignorance is bliss card. If I don't listen to it, it never happened.

It's actually "Whiskey In The Jar", an awful cover of the Thin Lizzy cover of the Dubliner's cover of an old Irish folk song. Guess what? I like it. I think Hetfield, although unable to sound tuneful, really did try for that song. He did his best to put emotion into that song. The way he says "Here I am in prison!!!" sounds to most people ridiculous and contemptible, but I think he puts some real frustration into that song. Although Thin Lizzy's was so much more graceful, Hetfield sounded much more like he really wanted to BE there, and the emotioon was more genuine.

I admit, I like the slow drive the song carries itself. (OK)..
that's, like, the worst cover there, runner-up is Nick Cave's Loverman

can't you guys develop some taste and like the covers of BOC's Astronomy and Bob Seger's Turn the Page?

as for Lulu, i've tried listening to youtubes of some songs and i can't get past the 10-second mark

I know it's horrible, but I think there's some real emotion in there Thin Lizzy hasn't captured.

I think their cover of Turn the Page wasn't bad.

I personally thought their cover of Turn the Page was excellent. I also quite liked Astronomy and Tuesday's Gone (although personally I think no one can play it better than Skynrd). They still did the song justice.

I haven't heard the whole album, but I saw a clip of Lou Reed and Metallica playing on the Jools Holland show, and was actually suprised at how non-terrible the song they played was. I thought it would be hilariously bad because of all the stuff I'd heard about it, but some of the riffs were actually pretty sweet, if a little generic, and I thought Reed's voice was sort of a cool addition. Don't get me wrong, it was still pretty lame and weird, but I was surprised at how decent it was. I still probably won't listen to the whole album though.

i get the feeling Hetfield didn't even understand what he was singing

"Irish brogue, d'oh"
"wack for my daddi-o - must be beat poetry"

I get that feeling too. And I find it quite funny, actually.
It's a song that is very easy to find fault with, I think, but if perhaps Lars Ulrich was a bit less aggressive, and they all just calmed down a bit, then the song would have been very good.
I don't think he understood any of it, but "mu-shur-eeee-de-ma-dooo-du-ma-dahhh!" sounds awesome no matter who sings it.
