Interesting argument. I will happily agree that there are aspects of their artistry which are worthy of merit.
For example: one of their worst songs must be "Whiskey In The Jar", an awful cover of the Thin Lizzy cover of the Dubliner's cover of an old Irish folk song. Guess what? I like it. I think Hetfield, although unable to sound tuneful, really did try for that song. He did his best to put emotion into that song. The way he says "Here I am in prison!!!" sounds to most people ridiculous and contemptible, but I think he puts some real frustration into that song. Although Thin Lizzy's was so much more graceful, Hetfield sounded much more like he really wanted to BE there, and the emotioon was more genuine. God, I can write crap when I feel like it. |

I havent heard this album but I saw them play a few tracks off it on Jools Holland and yes, it was dreadful.
One thing though. Why has this thread focused almost exclusively on Metallica? From what I heard, this wasn't Metallica at their best. Of course it wasn't. However there was nothing massively horrific about them in what they played on his show. Lou Reed playing with Metallica on the other hand... |

Well my point was actually that Lou Reed and Metallica were never gonna play well together, no matter at what stage in either of their careers they decided to collaborate.
Also, I dont think this is their lowest point. I liked Death Magnetic, even if it was recycled and an attempt to go back to basics. It was a good album, it just wasn't at all relevant. Load, Reload and St. Anger were all lower points, in my opinion. |

Hmmm... I think this live performance must be the very worst.
Lou Reed & Metallica - Iced Honey (Later Live with Jools Holland) 8th Nov 2011 - YouTube They just don't go together. Lou looks uneasy, he doesn't want to be doing it at all. For all I've said, Garage Inc. wasn't too bad... |
