I hate Nirvana and their corporate rock. They were just another MTV band who made tons of videos and radio-friendly songs.

Pearl Jam play arenas/stadiums worldwide, so the people still care about them.
I think this is the most wrong thing i've ever read. First we'll have to forget the irony of a Pearl Jam fan calling another band 'corporate rock' and an 'MTV band', after which we must escape the massive hypocrisy of knocking Nirvana for their mainstream success whilst citing album sales as a reason for Pearl Jam being superior.

The idea of Pearl Jam being anything other than a corporate rock/ stadium band is laughable. The reason why Green River disbanded was because Ament and Gossard wanted the band to go mainstream which conflicted with Arm and Turner who wanted the band to stick to their underground roots. And well done to them they wanted to create a big mainstream stadium rock band and they did it with Pearl Jam. But both sounds of both mother love bone and pearl jam was designed to cater to the largest audience at the time and it shows.

Nirvana on the other hand never aimed to be a big band, the state of which fame effected Cobain's mental health is evidence of a band who couldn't handle the effects of a popularity which they never asked for. Nevermind was not catered for a large audience, it was initially only projected to sell 50,000 copies on the back of Sonic Youth's Goo selling 100,000. The fact that it became so popular that it knocked Michael Jackson's Bad off the top off the charts was insane something of which will never happen again. In Utero was Nirvana's way of trying to rebel against the success of Nevermind, deliberately trying to shed its mainstream appeal.

Can i just say i hate the term 'grunge'? Every time i hear it its like someone dragging their fingernails across a black board. It isn't the right term to use to describe the music thats being discussed, it was just a marketing term used to sell records once the scene became popular in the early 90's. It was a tongue in cheek term used by a sub pop employee to describe their bands to a music journalist when the scene started to catch the attention of the music press and large labels. Unfortunately it became a blanket term which covered a host of Seattle bands and musical styles.

The bands we should be interested in were the alt rock/punk bands which emerged out of the Seattle punk scene in the early 80's which fused a lot of influences of both styles to create their own unique sound. Pearl Jam, AiC and STP as mentioned before shouldn't be included here as they were more hair metal/stadium rock bands with a 'grunge' label added in the 90's to sell records. Neither of the bands on the list were 90's as they all began in the mid/late 80's.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned 'The Gits' or '7 Year Bitch' yet and i personally think that 'Love Battery' and 'Blood Circus' are very under-rated. There are so many bands that it makes a poll pointless and I wouldn't restrict myself to Seattle when discussing this music as during the same period there were so many great alt punk bands, Sonic Youth released two amazing alt punk albums in 'Goo' and 'Dirty', and then you had Dinosaur Jr, The Breeders, Pussy Galore, Green Magnet School, Buffalo Tom, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Dead Moon, Babes in Toyland, Sleater-Kinney, Rapeman, Meat Puppets to name just a hand full.

Really? That whole genre was sort of boring. I still listen to Dirt on a regular basis and still love it like the first time I listened to it.

I don't find the genre boring at all, but I find AIC boring. But you're in good company on here, as most people think the band are the best thing since sliced bread.

There was so much going on at that time its hard to choose. Including loads from this time period but not this musical scene. When I was younger I was a really big Nirvana and AIC fan but have kind of outgrown them now. I remember being a lot more shaken by Staleys death then Kurts though, possibly because I was just older. With how my musical tastes stand now I would say my favorite bands from this time period would be Heatmiser and/or Seaweed.

From what I read I was a lot more shaken up by the death of Staley. I guess because it was slow and gradual which is kind of sad. I read he developed chronic heroin use from the tragic death of his father suffering from a heroin overdose. He became depressed and wanted to understand how it was like for him by following the same path. It's quite tragic how died like his father...

Now Kurt Cobain was just a random boom! His death was a lot more mysterious.
