Bands like Pearl Jam and STP largely became irrelevant here around 10 years ago, its only obsessive types like me that go on about how great they are You have to remember that American rock bands are far less appreciated here in the UK than British ones are in the UK, sad but true. Nirvana are of course one of those exceptions, everybody seems to know who they are. Where I found Pearl Jam to be really well known and famous are other European countries and Latin America as I put in a previous post.

Both bands at their heyday:

Ten: 13x Platinum
Nevermind: 10x Platinum

Vs.: 7x Platinum
In Utero: 5x Platinum

To this day, Pearl Jam has shipped 31.5 million albums, and Nirvana 25.

The production of Nevermind made them a corporate band (even Kurt didn't like how the album sounded), I don't care about the music style.
When I listen to Bleach and Nevermind, I can't believe they are the same band.

Nirvana and Pearl Jam are equally popular in Australia. They get about the same amount of play. Ten had about 500,000 while Nevermind had around 350,000 record sales. I'm assuming since Pearl Jam had substantially more records than Nirvana did, they sold more records in Australia.

But look at how many albums Pearl Jam have compared to Nirvana! There is only so much stuff theat Nirvana fans can buy.

That was part of the reason I pointed out behind the record sales. If Nirvana had around the same amount of records, it would of been different.

All these statistics actually point to Nirvana as actually being the bigger band. If they had as many albums as Pearl Jam and had maintained their popularity, their albums sales would be so far ahead of Pearl Jam.

Those aren't the numbers from their heyday, those are the current numbers, but okay I guess you're right as far as the US goes. It's a pretty different picture when you compare worldwide sales though.

Considering the fact that Pearl Jam has simply released a lot more material than Nirvana did, that's an apples and oranges comparison.

How's that now? It didn't sound like mainstream music circa 1991 and was produced by a guy who, at the time, was a relatively unknown indie producer.

They already are despite probable statistics. If you consider worldwide sales Pearl Jam estimated over 60 million while Nirvana estimated over 75 million. You can't prove they were any bigger than a worldwide estimate.
