Kurt was most inspired by bands like pixies.

i wasn't denying pearl jam were a grunge band. what i meant to express is that grunge/seattle sound is not a genre. the bands sounded often nothing alike. These aren't the four big bands of a genre- They're the 4 big bands of a movement.
Its good to debate each individuals concept of the history of music, that is what a music forum is meant for. But so many times people contradict themselves. For example: You state 1st, that pearl jam is classical orientated. Then you state, not denying they were grunge, etc. And to say that the 5 major bands often sound nothing alike? When they all applied the same chord patterns, lyrics, etc. Twisting & adding a little poetry to ones post does not make it a fact, Only a personal opinion. I think we are splitting hairs here, I can suggest the fact that 90s/grunge could be influenced by blues, jazz, gospel, and so on. And the music industry has its own terms of classifications. And even then, it can change day by day. I agree to an extent the indie sound has been around even before the term 'Indie' was conceived. I just believe there are to many terms to different styles as it is. let alone personal classifications. The most convenial way of doing/applying things is so often dismissed. I guess I am old school, Music is music within its individual styles, etc. I have enjoyed this debate, and look forward to more. Peace.

Dirt was brilliant IMO - I prefer it over Facelift, Sap and their S/T. I'd say I enjoy Jar of Flies about as much as Dirt and that's where I think they best showed their diversity.

Alice in Chains is a bit of an odd band in grunge. Some metal fans will avoid them because they're grunge and people might avoid them in general because they're more metallic than most grunge bands. People might also avoid them because of Staley's accent, but I don't actually mind it. In fact, I think he was one of the best vocalists of the 90s and a major part of the band.

STP is from San Diego...

I voted for Nirvana, they got the ball rolling, mainstream wise, with "smells like teen spirit," suddenly hair bands were out, and flannels were in... but in the realm of things, you could throw a dart at all those bands, it is splitting hairs, as they all rock...

Grunge can be summed up in three records:

Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff
The late 80s. While the UK was going Madchester crazy, some west coast yanks produced a 6 track EP that took The Stooges, Hüsker Dü, The Pixies & Dinosaur Jr and rolled them up into one big ball of ear splitting noise. Stand out track - 'In 'n' out of Grace' - contained a pre-Primal Scream 'Loaded' sample from Wild Angels. It might not be the first grunge record but it's an era defining sound.

Nirvana - Sliver
Summer 1991. Between the two album releases of Bleach and Nevermind, Nirvana hit the pinnacle of their career with 3 minutes of pure pop - wrapped up in squealing distorted guitars. From this point on it would all be downhill...

Pearl Jam - Alive
The kerching of a cash register and the sound of a genre dying on it's feet. Overblown, warbly crap. Unfortunately, grunge would shuffle on for many years before being put out of it's misery.

Pathetic poll, It seems on any grunge poll these days, these five bands are the only ones recognised...
Then follows the pitiful arguing about all the other bands trying to rip of Nirvana...
