Yea I guess I didn't consider them starting in the late 80s.

Queensryque were pretty highly reckoned before that though, especially since progressive was big in the 80s. The others pretty much broke out in the 90s with a whole new scene. Though supposedly there's a link.

As the Rolling Stones said,'But its all over now.'
Tate and the band have divorced.

Soundgarden. One of the best vocalists, great riffs and diversity. I like Nirvana, but IMO it's a bit overrated. Simple songs, often similar to themselves. If Kurt hadn't died most of current fans wouldn't have heard about this band.

Considering how massively popular they were before his death, I seriously doubt that. They still would have been one of the biggest rock bands of the 90s regardless.

Sure, Nirvana was extremely popular in 90s and with Kurt alive would've been now popular, but masses like tragic histories and many of today Nirvana's fans like them only because Kurt's death.

Death elevates anyone to legend status.

Had Eddie Vedder died in 1994, he'd be bigger than Lennon, Morrison and Mercury together.

He was like the second coming of Jesus Christ 20 years ago.

Why do I get the distinct impression I'm reading comments from people who have little or no memory of the early 90s?

Kurt Cobain didn't die that long ago, most people that like them today, liked or knew of the band back then.

I don't think that would've been the case, Morrison and Mercury were more flamboyant and Lennon largely due to the Beatles connection.

Or maybe it's due to the fact that people wanted to know why they were/are such a big deal in terms of the Grunge era. Only to find out what happened to Kurt after listening to the music.
