I'm not even sure I'd say late 80s/early 90s either. That would really only apply to the Pixies. The others all started in the early 80s. Camper Van Beethoven released all of their material (except the recent reunion stuff) in the 80s. Violent Femmes' best music was all in the 80s.

You say this like he completely invented grunge music. Apparently you've never heard of the Melvins, Green River, or Screaming Trees. To me it seems like Cobain was just some guy that got lucky and had his name attached to the genre.
