I like their first album, and some of the second in a nostalgic kinda way, but the magic is lost for the most part with them, just alright band who made one fun album and a whole lot of stuff that deserves to be buried and forgotten about.
I totally agree for the most part, but at this point in the thread it seems like every other 90s band from Seattle 'deserves' a mention so... why not? You must remember how awesome the video for Peaches was. Come on.

It's not like I'm trying to defend Ugly Kid Joe here or something (you want to talk about a stinker of a 2nd album... WOW).

Hey what about Alice Mudgarden though?

Yeah, Peaches was a fun video. They were a fun band.

Wish I could find that performance of "Mach 5" on Conan, with Man Weinberg sitting on on drums, that was cool.

I consider Alice In Chains the best band. Followed by Pearl Jam.

My vote:
Alice In Chains – I love these guys’ gloom and doom take on grunge and they are the most consistent band on here with only the Sap EP being questionable. From the metallic “We Die Young” or “Man In the Box” to the lighter, acoustic side like “Nutshell” pretty much everything is great. R.I.P Layne Staley.

Other bands:
Nirvana – not terrible or anything but still very overrated. Perhaps I just listened to “Nevermind” too many times as a kid (when I really liked them actually) but I find I just don’t care to listen to them anymore, minus the occasional spin of “In Utero” or an acoustic cover. Just an average band in my mind now.

Soundgarden – I’m not big on “Down On the Upside” but everything else I’ve heard by these guys is great, some standouts being “Jesus Christ Pose”, “Limo Wreck”, “4th of July” and “Outshined”. Tied with Pearl Jam as my second favourite here.

Pearl Jam – Eddie Vedder is definitely one of my favourite alt. rock/grunge vocalists and their first 3 albums are all real ****ing classics. I didn’t even mind all the experimentation on “No Code” which I think is better than anything they’ve done since.

Stone Temple Pilots – not a bad band. My faovurite album of theirs is actually “Shangri La Dee DA” or whatever its called. It’s very very mellow, much mellower than most music I listen to but I still love it.

Mudhoney – haven’t heard enough to judge properly.

Other – I guess Melvins don’t count?? I don’t really consider anything they did grunge but know a lot of people do.

Tad - haven't heard

Mudhoney and Tad are both top of the line in my opinion.

"Superfuzz Bigmuff plus Early Singles" is the epitome of the grunge sound.

for Tad "God's Balls" and "8-Way Santa" are incredible releases that fall more on the metal side than the punk side of grunge I think.

Would take either of those over any of the big name bands.

especially this album:

8-Way Santa by Tad : Reviews and Ratings - Rate Your Music

Like I say, I like Tad for their metalish sound. I would say they were closer to Melvins than they were Nirvana. Also have traits from Noise Rock and Sludge at times.

still rank this as one of my favorites in all of grunge:

but early Mudhoney was great too.

This song is pretty much THE grunge song

and of course:

fooking love this song.

2 more amazing tracks.

love that fuzz tone on this one.

and another classic.

and finally, one of my favorites:

that is just a few Mudhoney moments. I think they should have a lot more votes than they do.

I love Mudhoney more. They were more on the punk side, and had a good fuzzy garage rock tone to them as well.

Last few albums have not been anything all that special. But when they were at their peak they were probably the best.

Green River was cool as well.
