They've been around for yonks but I've really only been listening to their newer albums from the last 10-years or so. That being said, if you're interested in the sound I'd recommend their 2002 album Unity.
I know this band and I like their third album Perfect Man and they along with Running Wild a similiar German band, get far less attention than the other better known German bands. They`re certainly speed metal but not sure if I`d classify them as power metal, but its been years since I heard that album. Thanks for the mention and will give them a listen to see how power metal they are.

The only problem with Helloween, they`re not the best group to get somebody into power metal with, because they are errrrrr very cheesy to say the least They`re a power metal band for people already into power metal.

Another great power metal album from 1988 from Riot, now Riot weren`t exactly a newbie metal band but a band who had established themselves in the late 1970s and early 1980s with an arena metal sound that was especially evident on their excellent Fire Down Under album in 1981, but since then had really seen their fortunes go downhill. They made something of a comeback in 1988 with a power metal sound and a new vocalist who sounded similiar at times to Klaus Meine of the Scorpions.

Kinda strange that Stratovarius hasn't gotten any love yet. They're basically the band that Dragonforce would be if they could write songs. ****ing amazing band.

Hey I really like Stratovarius especially the albums Episode and Visions but because I`m still listening to power metal albums of the 1980s haven`t gotten around to listening to them again
