Anyone have any recommendations of instrumental power metal? I've always been sort of interested in this genre but the vocals are generally a huge turnoff for me. I could definitely see myself enjoying some kind of highly-complex, fast, classical-inflected version of it though.

'Nuff said.
I was wondering when somebody was going to post Gamma Ray in here.

They've been posted and mentioned several times.

Power metal without those power metal vocals just ain't power metal! So power metal just instrumentals is really a no go, I know there are some bands but don't know them well enough to recommend them. BTW there are quite a few power metal bands that have some grittier vocalists maybe these will appeal to you, what is it you specifically don't like about power metal vocalists?

A great listen for any Angra fans is this album by fellow Brazilian band Viper, who pre-dated Angra by a decade and most importantly was the previous band of Andre Matos. Viper played a combo of speed, power, prog and alternative metal without really mastering any of these sub-genres but on Theatre of Fate they got it right and its also they're most power metal realease, strictly for those adept with the genre.

Viper Theatre of Fate 1987

I've just realized that I've covered more than 40 power metal albums on this thread released between the mid 1980s to 1997. IMO these are the ten best of that time period:

1. Stratovarius Visions 1997
2. Nevermore Politics of Ecstasy 1996
3. Blind Guardian Imaginations From the Other Side 1997
4. Crimson Glory Transcendence 1986
5. Virgin Steele The Marriage of Heaven and Hell pt.1/pt.2 1994-1995
6. Helloween Keeper of the Seven Keys pt.1/pt.2 1987-1988
7. Angra Holy Land 1996
8. Manowar Triumph of Steel 1992
9. Metal Church Blessing in Disguise 1989
10. Iced Earth The Dark Saga 1996

Malmsteen was who I thought of too. Thing is, you could get certain tracks on albums by the likes of TSO, Savatage, Tyr and so on that would be instrumental, but a) the album would not be entirely so and b) some of those would not, or might not, be considered strictly power metal. Is, for instance, Virgin Steele power metal? Is Manowar? How is it decided, Unknown Soldier? Can't you get an education thread up, explaining it to us non-sub-genre folks?

Seriously, I'd like to know: what makes metal "power" as opposed to any other sub-genre? Is there a list?

Would something like this work?

or this?

or even this maybe?

Perhaps a good "metal instrumentals" comp could be arranged? Anyone? Oh, okay then, I'll do it....

Tell me what type of stuff you'd like in the education post and I'll put something together.
