I was into them for like half an hour. After that it just started sounding like overproduced, way-too-modern groove/thrash with no emotion other than generic aggression that got boring pretty quick. Their earlier stuff is better though.

on the other hand, I found it pretty well structured, the keyboards insanely cool and the vocalist a madman

Well, you're a musician, so you're probably going to get more out of it than a rube like me. Symphony X sound like the kind of band that appeals to people who have an appreciation of musical theory. Me, not so much.

Is that why you don't like Dream Theater?

To be honest, anything with any connection to eraserhead I find suspicious.

Anyway, I'm ploughing through the discography of another fantastic doom metal band (still has a place here): Thy Serpent:

They have their moments, but pretty much yeah. They've got the chops obviously, but they usually refuse to make any actual interesting music. Twenty minute long songs have been done, and they don't really bring anything new to the table.

i am a musician yet i don't really like DT much

i admire Petrucci's chops, but La Brie's voice and Ruddress' keys do them in for me

Now here's the HammerFall debut album and as The Batlord said on a previous thread somewhere, this band are a "Celebration of Metal" they seem to combine all your favourite mainstream metal and power metal bands in one mixture and yet make the whole thing their own. Along with Stratovarius, they are probably one of the most accessible power metal outfits around and certainly one of the very best. The HammerFall legend definitely kicks off on their debut album.
