Yes, I should have been clearer. But it looks like that discussion died out anyway so perhaps a change is in order

Most of the albums being discussed on here now are not very relevant either, as most are more than 25 years old anyway.

I agree with that. I don't particularly like the songs from side A, and that is the only seventies album I like. But of course we're talking about a debut from much more than 25 years ago. Maybe I have to defaul to Welcome to the Jungle, and as that was preceded by an EP, maybe it shouldn't count. Tears for Fears' first album was pretty good, judging by the singles, but I have no idea about the so-called album tracks. I am a big fan of Bad English (self-titled), but that was a supergroup and therefore only technically a debut.

The only 70s album by the Cars or any band?

The Bad English debut is a very good album if you like that polished soft rock sound (which I do) I never really liked John Waite as a vocalist or artist, but being backed by 50% of Journey, Ricky Phillips and Dean Castronovo really brought out the best in him.

70's album, by any artist. And I forgot this is the rock section, so Tears for Fears wouldn't count. I like John Waite as a solo artist, lyrically and vocally, but I think he's better with a rock band behind him and Bad English had great musicians. That album managed to be rocking and have emotional depth, which I consider a rare combination. It could have been even bigger if the band had done a few more videos for MTV. By the way, John Waite released an album this year or last which rocks more than he has since Bad English and is pretty good - check out some of it on YouTube.

I can't say Smile Empty Soul is a good band at all, so I certainly wouldn't enjoy their debut. In fact they were one of the bands that caused me to quit listening to the radio. Post-grunge probably doesn't belong in this thread
