Old school death metal was kinda behind that revival though. Thrash revival was it's own thing and ruled that scene at the time and death metal revivalism was more or less a logical afterthought that didn't have nearly the same level of consciousness. I mean thrash revival was a downright bandwagon of stupidity.

And at that point nu metal was dead. Linkin Park had peaked, Deftones had peaked, Korn had peaked a long time ago. Nu metal was a recent corpse but definitely a corpse. Maybe not even a recent corpse as the early 00's kind of kept the whole thing limping along with Linkin Park's surge in popularity.

Yeah I used "old-school revivalism" as a general term. It was definitely death metal backing it the most.

I mean See You On the Other Side sold 220k in the first week alone and Saturday Night Wrist charted quite a bit both in North America and Europe. Not their heyday sure but both bands were still doing relatively well (until Deftones went on hiatus in '07). The best Linkin Park were doing was riding the last waves of Transformers money so I'll give you that much.

Nu metal wasn't dead but it was weak. This allowed these other metal revivals to pick up more steam, albeit not in the mainstream unfortunately.

Yeah that was extremely poor word choice on my part. When I said "was kinda behind" I meant "the old school metal revival happened because of thrash and then there was a death metal revival that came behind that revival because it just made sense for it to happen even though it wasn't the focus".

Nah by 2005 when Those Once Loyal came out nu metal was totally dead. Stick a fork in it and the fork can't get through cause the corpse is so stiff. Nobody cared, it wasn't on the radio, nobody buying underground metal ever cared, it was simply dead. If Linkin Park managed to push units after the death then it's because they stopped sounding like Hybrid Theory.

See You On the Other Side was 2005 bruv. Saturday Night Wrist was '06. Nu metal clearly still had some appeal.

I don't know when Deftones were last a prominent radio band, but they're still going strong to this day in terms of having a fanbase that look forward to their new albums, playing shows, etc. They never stopped being popular, even if they stopped being the kind of popular that you can be when the radio loves you.

What the **** are those? Is one of them that Linkin Park thing you were talking about? Cause I already said Linkin Park stopped sounding like Hybrid Theory after their first couple albums.

No they are not popular. If they have a fanbase it's vastly diminished and niche. And as far as I know they stopped being a prominent radio band before 2000.

I get around on the internet in terms of music sites, and my clear impression is that lots of music/metal geeks care about Deftones, even if they're not the cup of tea of sections of those groups, of course.

Not exactly hard to find a Deftones fan online.
