Anybody who can like nu metal as a genre is already going to be one of "those" people, Malmsteen is reasonable to like as a goof, but **** Tool.

Eh, Lateralus and Aenima are both great albums.

You have to be something special to sell any kind of prog-metal to an audience in the millions and actually get a weird song like 'Schism' to hit #1 on Mainstream Rock radio. That's a helluva feat even in the early 00's.

Tool's fanbase sucks, but I have mad respect for any band that can become one of the gateway groups into heavier music despite having limited commercial viability.

Maynard's obnoxious as **** but ja I like em alright.

Malmsteen is absolute twaddle though.

Like usually when I try to listen to Tool, I appreciate their style but also find myself wishing that there was just something more to their songs, somehow.
I guess I especially find the guitar playing a bit too samey across the songs.
I don't think there's any way forward for me except just playing this as background music until it sticks.

The first Malmsteen album gets my vote. It's twaddle, but in a fun way.
