Oh my ****ing god! I'd completely forgotten that song existed till I saw your video. I was obsessed with this song for like a week almost a decade ago. Now I gotta go relive my childhood.

Those Mötley Crüe and W.A.S.P. songs just sound so pretty that they don't do much for me. I've never understood Mötley Crüe's cutesy, gratuitous use of umlauts (why would they want them?) and I also don't like the goofiness of "Blinded in Texas."
I prefer harsher-sounding songs. At The Gates - "Cold" At The Gates - Cold - YouTube EDIT: About the umlauts, I just read this on Wikipedia: "After modifying the spelling slightly, 'Mötley Crüe' was eventually selected as the band's name, with the stylistic decision suggested by Neil to add the two sets of metal umlauts supposedly inspired by the German beer Löwenbräu, which the members were drinking at the time." I guess the umlauts annoy me because they are just for show...you don't actually pronounce them when saying 'Mötley Crüe.' Yes...maybe that's what annoys me about a lot of metal bands. They are just show, without substance. Watching them is like watching a musical, and I hate musicals. Like musicals, many metal bands I hear don't seem authentic. There. That's my sweeping, over-generalizing condemnation for the day.

I love that album so, so much. With all the ****ed up black metal and whatnot, I still always end up giving this a spin or five whenever I'm feeling depressed and nihilistic. One of the few albums that manages to meld rage and sorrow just perfectly.

Why yes...melding rage and sorrow, a good listen when one is feeling depressed and nihilistic. You describe "Slaughter of the Soul" very well.

Converge was pretty devastating to the ear, but they could also come up with some really catchy material.

I know. I'm not!
Here's a cheery song by Converge that I like. It's rather unrelenting. Converge - "You Fail Me" Converge - You Fail Me - YouTube

Windir -- "Svartesmeden og Lundamyrstrollet"
("The Blacksmith And The Troll Of Lundamyri ") I like the sound of this song, even though it's about...trolls. :/ I read on Wikipedia that lead musician Valfar died of hypthermia in 2004 while trying to reach his family's cabin on foot in winter. He was caught in a snowstorm and never arrived. I've stayed in a family cabin in Norway in summer, far out in the wilderness in evergreen forests dabbed with open meadows. I remember taking a walk to explore. After around 10 minutes the aloneness got a little eerie...all those trees and me...and so I returned to the cabin and its cosy outhouse. I imagine how desolate that landscape would feel in winter...a little like the sound of this song. It's too bad Valfar died so young, when he was only 25.
