The world needs to rediscover EW's Supercoven EP released between Come My Fanatics and Dopethrone. It knocks just as hard and heavy as their best and the title track is apparently Jus Osborn's fav Wizard song.

omgomgomg I have a huge blind spot for Saxon's post-peak discography cause it never really clicked with me. That guitarist they got to replace Graham Oliver in 95 could have been great in another band but his staccato style just doesn't really sync with Biff Byford as a singer and even though they're often good they're usually not great and just don't sound like Saxon.

But Dogs of War, their last with Oliver on guitar and an album I've never listened to before, is ****ing hype for me cause it sounds like the last time Saxon truly sounded like Saxon and while it doesn't have 11/10 songs like "Wheels of Steel" or "Denim and Leather" it does sound like a seasoned band who have learned to write great songs that express everything that is great about them in a mature context. It's a Saxon album for a hopeless fan who has needed a new Saxon album to gush over for a decade and a half.

Mother****ing Dogs of War ****ing kills!

Generally not a big fan of Darkthrone-core but the pure viciousness of this track is everything I could ever love about that **** if it was this lit all the time, and that last half of pure, never ending, apocalyptic inertia is a perfect moment in metal history. Katharsis and Orcustus are the two bands I can think of who can do this kind of pure Norwegian black metal and make me care.

I think this might possibly be the least dated, most accessible to outsiders traditional heavy metal album ever made. It still makes corny missteps and isn't perfect but the songwriting is strong and catchy and could have been a non-embarrassing alternative to butt rock on radio stations that play butt rock and legitimately killed given the right chance. That's loaded praise but Symbol of Salvation is still a bombass album and "Reign of Fire" and "Last Train Home" could have been #1 hit singles.
