Still, not as bad as Chuck in Voodoocult. Remember seeing the line up for that band and thinking, this is going to rule!.... and yeah, i was rather disappointed.

You'd do well to get my opinion more often, as you just might learn something.

but but but you still don't have enough KISS

BastardofYoung 05-22-2012 08:06 PM

Kiss, you are not missing much. The bad they did outweighs the good. "Kiss", "Hotter than Hell" and "Destroyer" are all ya really need from them. I would even say "Alive"... can settle with an essential album and have most of the moments worth having.

Yeah, I agree. Though all the albums had a few good songs on them, they were semi-overrated.

Interesting that you say this because I have to say, although not exactly struggling, I'm not as taken with Death as their reputation led me to believe I would be.

You know, I have to respect Death and their obvious contributions to the Death Metal genre (or sub-genre, whatever.). Those albums show some great talent, great musicianship and solid songwriting.... but yet, i still find myself getting bored with them. For what they are, I cannot argue the talent they contain... just something about it winds up boring me.

I still love the first 3 albums a lot though. "Scream Bloody Gore", "Leprosy" and "Spiritual Healing" are decent enough to hold my interest.

"The Sound of Perseverance" is the one though that I do not understand the love in at all. Though I love "Voice of the Soul", which is telling when the most memorable track is an instrumental.

Death's genius was in their first two albums (Spiritual Healing was great, but not on the same level as the first two). I think it's mainly musicians that dig their later stuff. But, I mean, come one...

...how can you not love that?

Howard the Duck 05-23-2012 08:21 AM

^^i dig either sides

but i have to admit "Sound of Perseverance" is quite a chore to sit through

I think there are some elements that are very difficult to successfully mesh with Death Metal. It's a style that is great for conveying a wonderful sensation of speed; but it's not a style that's goes great with emoting. It's not like I don't like music that emotes, but I can't think of an example of which successfully marries Death Metal with emoting beyond that established in the genres infancy. I don't think it'd be unfair to say Chuck tried very, very hard to circle this square, but I don't think he pulled it off.
