Chuck Schuldiner had hands down the coolest solos in all of metal. As much as I like Death I like his solos more. They manage to be stately, esoteric, beautiful, while somehow also embodying metal in it's purest form in a way nothing has ever embodied metal. They kinda bring to mind Maiden without the camp.

So you will hate me if I point out that I think Schuldiner has a pretty limited repetoire as a solo player? He's got these little scale runs that he can't stop doing. They're all over the place on his Control Denied album too. Still sounds great, so I like him as a soloist.

I don't really care if he's limited. He suits what he does brilliantly and uniquely so if he wouldn't be able to hang in a jazz improvisation then I'm fine.

Seriously though, you should really check out Control Denied if you haven't heard it properly already. There's some pretty amazing instrumental sections where Chuck is giving his all on the guitar.

I think the singer got in the way of my appreciation of Control Denied when I've tried to listen to them but I'll give them another shot.
