I think Skeletonwitch shreds. They're nothing innovative but they're great musicians who have a good knack for simultaneously sick and catchy riffs.

I never liked them because they play thrash with no energy much like any thrash revival band but throw in a bit of boring black metal influence to make them sound different from Municipal Waste when they were never any better.

they're cooler than 3 Inches of Blood tho

I've been trying to listen to Lamb of God's last album, Sturm und Drang, which was supposedly a return to form but it's just as dull as Sacrament which was my breaking point. It doesn't even have the songwriting panache of As the Palaces Burn or Ashes of the Wake and I don't even particularly like those for their sterile production and uninteresting sound. So as far as I'm concerned Lamb of God will only ever be worthwhile for Burn the Priest and New American Gospel. Why are so many people so stupid about this and why is the band so clueless about why they were good in the first place?

I never really liked Lamb of God. They've got a great drummer and some of the guitar work is good, but the overall impression just never really sat well with me.

But holy **** is New American Gospel fantastic. The dry, brittle production isn't the best but it adds a visceral edge that most overproduced modern metal albums don't even know they're squandering and I'd suspect Lamb of God didn't either. Much is the shame.
The best part is that Lamb of God really do have an instinct for what will make your head bang, and while they'd form songs with these ideas in mind later on, here they weren't as accomplished songwriters but they had those headbanging ideas just as strongly and would form more rudimentary songs around one section, or a buildup to a section and that section, that would obliterate you without the need for a standard verse-chorus-verse-chorus song structure to justify something that didn't warrant that much craft, so that you could get in and get out with your balls destroyed but your mind still interested in what was coming next. I think they were basically a band with one single thing that they could absolutely nail but tack on a bunch of songwriting **** for the sake of making them a more respectable band and it all fell apart and made them sound uninteresting. It's amazing that they had two albums in them tbh. |
