At the moment, I'm listening to a bit of Sleep. Classic 90s doom metal.

Just spent the last hour going through yet more brutal death metal bands to see if I could find a band or two worth my time. How the **** can so many people get it so wrong when they obviously have worn out Cryptopsy and Suffocation albums lying within arms reach of their stereo?! When they're not masturbating all over their instruments they're doing all the most brain dead, slammy parts of Suffocation not even half as good (NY brutal death metal can suck my ass). At this point I'd actually settle for 100% ripoffs of those two bands; if the music is going to be derivative then at least it can be derivative and reasonably good.

**** this **** I need to clean my ears out.

Aw yeah, baby. Decapitated have some good earlier **** that's a nice representation of brutal death metal that manages to not be as good as Cryptopsy while also being cool, but Organic Hallucinosis is a totally different beast that successfully combines brutal death metal and Meshuggah in a way that makes both seem like a worthwhile venture, cause bands using either influence are generally terrible. Probably the most underrated death metal album of the new millennium.

"Angel of Death" is definitely my favorite Slayer song because it epitomizes violence in metal in a way that I don't think any other metal song does. And while Reign in Blood is not quite my fav Slayer album since so many of the songs aren't brilliant all by themselves, I think that's the brilliance of the album. If you want standalone metal anthems of utmost violence then you have the two bookends, "Angel of Death" and "Raining Blood", but more than any other Slayer album, and quite possibly any other metal album ever recorded, Reign in Blood absolutely needed to be recorded for the sake of, not only metal, but of aggressive music in general.

I don't think any other album, be it metal or otherwise, has ever expressed that same constant, immediate violence that has made 30 minutes feel like an abuse to your ears. There are plenty of death and black metal albums that have been more extreme, but I don't think there are any that have been more immediately aggressive for their entirety, and certainly there were none before and I don't think that that is even up for debate. Reign in Blood was simply the culmination of the point blank idea that metal could **** you up. And I don't know that that basic idea has ever been bettered. It's such a primal idea that you simply can't better it at this point afaic.

When I listen to that record it makes me think of asteroids hurling through space and the equation mass times velocity equals force.

That is an odd way to put it, but equating the album with physical impacts isn't the worst way to go I suppose.

I remember when the image first hit me. I was like goddamn this record is astonishing. I was outdoors listening on a Walkman. Ever since then it’s been how I grapple with the unworldly power it wields.

Don't forget to explain to these damn kids what a Walkman was...
