later Pestilence > early Pestilence

Holy spit this just might be a new top 10 or even top 5 death metal record. WTF was wrong with dunderheaded DM heads in 1993 who didn't buy this album like they were polybagged, 1st issue, variant cover comic books with foil covers and trading cards?

Alright, **** it, everything Pestilence does is amazing (except probably those reunion albums) so Imma stop making declarations until I've given them the proper multi-day marathon that I never did before. And then I'll beef up on my Asphyx knowledge.

But seriously I'm spamming at this point but this **** is basically a precursor to Obscura five years earlier.

Cannibal Corpse can be insanely good sometimes.

Bruhs, I always knew at least ONE slam death metal band would emerge that would be absolutely ****ing brutal and not ****ty, and Katalepsy are definitely one of the most sick DM bands I've ever heard.

It achieves atmosphere, not through keyboard orchestras, but by the grotesque performances by the vocals, the riffs, and the sheer onslaught of just how ****ing heavy it is. Actual real production helps tbh.

Kataklysm with Sylvain Houde were so great, after that I can take them or leave them, but the first few when he was their vocalist is some great Death Metal.

Kolossus is a fantastic record. No clue why it's not in the all-time pantheon for most metal heads but a finer blend of black/progressive/symphonic metal you'll be hard-pressed to find.

I'm listening to the new Arch Enemy album, Will to Power.
I got the CD in the mail today, but here's a Youtube link for anyone who is curious and lazy:

It's Arch Enemy... so don't expect a reinvention of metal. For what it's worth, I think there's several really great riffs on this thing so far. It will take me several passes through the whole album to really figure out how good it is compared to their other albums. Generally, I like all Angela Gossow era albums and the previous one with Alissa was allright, if perhaps relying a bit too much on various things the band had done many times before.

Go to 24:00 to get to the best "standing on a mountain top, swirling your hair around while plaing air guitar" moment on the album.
